Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Pinzini.
Kim, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Wow, who would have believed at age 51, I would completely change my career. I moved to Arizona 18 years ago from Tennessee. I didn’t know anyone, nor did I have a job. At that time, I had been a practicing Registered Dental Hygienist for over 15 years in Tennessee. When I moved to Arizona, I had to take a state board to be licensed in the state. After that, I worked full time for a while and part-time as Dental Hygienist in both California and Arizona. I met my husband here, but he lived in California. So, we would go to San Diego in the summer, where I was able to work my profession with several dental offices. After several years of living in both places, I found Jabz Boxing. It opened right across the street from my house in North Scottsdale.
I was a bit intimidated at first, being 50 and being in average shape. I thought I might be “too old”. Little did I know how addicted I would become. My body changed super quickly. I became stronger, more toned than ever before and had so much more energy. I was hooked. My husband said I looked like a High School girl! The original owner was moving out of state and wanted to sell her business. At that moment, I knew I wanted a career change. Within three months, I was the New proud owner of Jabz Boxing Pinnacle Peak. It honestly, has changed my life. The culture/community that we have built here is amazing. The women support, motivate and lift each other up every stinking day at Jabz. My soul is full every time I walk through the door. Owning a small fitness studio is not an easy task. I do most everything myself, but I do have a few incredible trainers that help lead the classes. I am also a Certified Personal Trainer and help individuals outside of Jabz. I love helping people, especially women, become more confident, build new relationships and improve their overall health through fitness.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Struggles are what you make of them. Buying, owning and running a small business is always a struggle. Keeping the place running as far as maintenance is one thing in itself. Financially, it can be a bold move to own a boutique-style fitness studio. Constantly adding new members can be tricky with so much competition in the fitness industry. I have a couple of Mantra bracelets that say, “Make today Count” and “Keep Going” and that’s exactly what I try to do every day I wake up.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Jabz Boxing is a fitness studio for women. All women, all ages, and all fitness levels. We box for fitness, not to be fighters. It’s a circuit style class with 16 stations. Total class time with warm-up and stretching is approximately 55 minutes. A trainer is present for every class and there’s a 16 person class limit. You basically have a personal trainer with you at every class.
We focus on Boxing, plyometrics, strength training and Cardio at every class. The key to our workouts is that they change daily. We have over 70 weeks of exercises so your body is always challenged. Progress is quick if you are consistent with the workouts. I get chills every time a woman does her 1st push-up on her toes or is finally able to lift heavier. It is so fulfilling! There might be some friendly competition, but all of these women help each other before, during and after their workouts. It could be a motivating text to get you to class or cheer while on the pull-up bar or even a fun Happy Hour after their workout. The energy can sometimes be all you need to push to the last bell.
What were you like growing up?
I think growing up, I was always outgoing, loud and friendly. I was voted Most School Spirited my Senior Year of High School. I played a lot of sports growing up, and Co-Captain of my Cheer Squad in High School. I was a bit of rebel, being the only family member to move so far away from home. Very independent, joined several clubs and was a leader in most that I did.
