Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Miller and Shannon Dougherty.
Kim and Shannon, the Fit Mom Diet duo’s story started with one small step after having children. As new moms, they felt overwhelmed with the responsibilities of raising children and taking care of themselves. The journey to try and get healthy was not an easy one but by surrounding themselves with a support system and developing a healthy living plan they each managed to lose over 50 lbs., become active and commit their lives to careers in the health and fitness industry. Although Kim and Shannon had not met yet, their lives were remarkably similar. Both struggled to find balance and happiness. As they individually found strategies to achieve their goals they wanted to give back and help others feel beautiful, empowered, strong and healthy.
Upon entering the health and fitness industry as fitness models, writers and healthy living advocates, they both knew from day one that their goal was to empower women, to promote a positive body image, and to teach others how to live a healthy lifestyle through clean eating and fitness. Most importantly, the goal was always this, TO CHANGE lives, one person at a time. Fit Mom Diet is a community designed to help educate, support and inspire moms to make positive changes in their life.
Kim and Shannon met casually at a photo shoot in the summer of 2011 and became fast friends. Their shared interests of living an active lifestyle, healthy eating and being real and genuine became the basis of their relationships and they served as support for each other as they each developed their brand in the industry. After some time working individually on many similar ventures, they made the decision to join together in an effort to truly help women and launched Fit Mom Diet.
At the core, Kim and Shannon believe that attitude determines your destiny, that beauty emulates from within and that every woman, with the right tools, resources and support, has the ability to achieve the body they want and the balance they desire. Being a mom is the hardest job you’ll ever love. You matter, so take care of you!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As business partners, our journey has been pretty smooth, but as with any business, we have had bumps along the way. Narrowing our focus and niche and determining exactly what we were out to do took some time,
We also had to learn to say no to certain things despite our enthusiasm for our work, you can’t do everything despite the desire and saying no opens opportunities and allows you to focus on what you really want to accomplish.
Additionally, we have been challenged at times in our industry, which can be for some go back to physical appearance, to keep in the forefront that health begins with the mind. You can have a fit physique and you can lose weight but that isn’t necessarily going to make you happy. You have to the work on that end as well. That’s one of the reasons we wrote Mental Fitness 101: Transform Your Body Through the Power of Your Mind.
Finally, we have had many opportunities to partner with companies and individuals who want to promote products or services that promise quick weight loss by easy methods (e.g., take this pill, lose weight without getting off the couch or eating right, etc.). While there are always money-making opportunities in those scenarios we have staying true to our core beliefs and mission which is health is a lifestyle and it takes transition and work, In the long run, though it is always worth putting in the effort. There is no magic pill.
Please tell us about Fit Mom Diet.
Fit Mom Diet is a community designed to help educate, support and inspire moms to make positive changes in their life. Moms have a great responsibility and need to take care of themselves in order to take better take care of those they love. The Fit Mom Diet resources will help moms at every stage of their fitness journey become healthier and happier. FMD is not just a diet plan, it’s a way of life rooted in the philosophy that eating a clean and healthy diet, being active and having a positive self-image is the key to happiness. FMD hopes to engage its members in a way that recognizes their individualities. We feel that people succeed in groups and it’s through supporting others that we achieve our own goals.
We are known for being REAL moms that provide inspiration on a daily basis. We share the good and the bad, the joy and the challenge. We feel by being very real with our audience rather than creating a persona online where everything is polished and perfect we are better able to connect with others. That sets us apart from many in our industry.
We are extremely proud of the books we have authored which have challenged thousands of women’s lives. We also take pride in the companies with whom we have partnered over the years to promote health, fitness and wellness and the projects upon which we have embarked. Finally, our widespread media coverage via television, news channels and magazines has been a labor of love and allowed us to connect with women everywhere. Most importantly, we are proud when we hear individual stories people send us from moms who write, because of you I believed I could do it.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We believe everything in one’s journey serves a purpose. Even mistakes are learning experiences. However, if we were to know then what we know now we may have narrowed our focus sooner.
One piece of advice we would offer to others is to ask for help. Others often want you to succeed and you only learn by doing and connecting. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from people you admire or who are doing it well. We also learned that although there are many people in our field doing what we do no one is us. Nobody does it exactly how we do and there is always enough room for everyone to succeed. Some people will resonate more closely with our style and stories and so although you can look to others for inspiration, it’s mostly important to just put your head down and work hard doing exactly what you do the way you do it. We believe in collaboration versus competition so we have worked very hard to always use that as our motto in business. Help others. Things always come back around.
