Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Brush.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After the economic crisis occurred in 2008, my husband and I decided to start our own business. The next and most important decision was “what kind of business?” We looked at the Phoenix metro area and saw that there weren’t many popcorn stores. We could establish a unique niche offering fresh, made-from-scratch gourmet popcorn. It took us two and a half years to do the research, develop our brand, find a location for our store, and open our doors. In June of 2012, our vision was realized and My Popcorn Kitchen has been popping up fresh, gourmet popcorn ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As the saying goes, “Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor.” Running a business always has its peaks and valleys. It’s the ability to adapt, make changes, solve problems, think and react in the moment, and move on.
My Popcorn Kitchen – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My Popcorn Kitchen was born out of a love for cooking (and eating!). Popcorn is one of the most versatile foods. It can simply be popped in oil and salt or coated in Caramels or Fruit flavors. Its lightness and crunch make it a delicious base for cheese flavors. And taking a fruit flavor popcorn or a caramel flavor popcorn and coating it in rich chocolate is amazing! We are known for our great variety – we feature over 60 flavors made in-store plus seasonal creations such as Pumpkin Spice Caramel, Eggnog, Gingerbread, Cupid’s Crunch, Barbeque, Midwestern White and many more. We are famous for our Beer Cheddar, our number one seller. This non-alcoholic spice blend makes our cheddar rich, sweet and creamy. The high quality of our ingredients and our attention to detail plus seeing the smiles on our customers’ faces keeps us motivated to keep doing what we’re doing. We also love to create new flavors such as our Red Velvet Cake (featured in February).
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Most definitely building a business from the ground up and seeing our customers come back in again and again. We won’t compromise or take short-cuts. All our popcorn is hand-crafted in small batches in our kitchen.
