Khrystyna Kozyuk

Hi Khrystyna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts with many hours of art classes at the University in Ukraine.

We had a small group of 9 people and long days painting steel life’s portraits in a studio, or we did plain air in the beautiful old town of Lviv to capture the architecture. Without internet computers or cell phones, life as a student was a real experience. Simple and slow, it is exactly the best environment to learn drawing and other creative disciplines.

After finishing my bachelor in Art I moved to Chicago. After such a transition I didn’t paint for while. Then started to attend community college for interior design. Sometime I was so hangry to paint so I started again. Sold my first painting in Chicago to my employer and more and more. Did dedicated one of my room to my studio and started to be more serious about. Did all possible shows and exhibitions.

I had my first successful solo show, and after, I quit my job and never went back to my regular job. After almost ten years of being a full-time artist in Chicago, I moved to Arizona with the idea of having my own studio/gallery. Three years ago, I rented a space in West Sedona and started creating there.

I do paint mostly in the studio and it is open to public to come over and see on progress and process of art being born. Now working with local galleries and international. Welcome to visit!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not an easy road.

In the beginning, when you don’t know how the art world is running, you can make a lot of mistakes and spend a lot of time and money without results. Many people do not respect your time, and the job of being a women’s artist sounds too easy.

The first step is to believe in your own success and keep improving all other skills needed. Don’t look back down, count mistakes, and just go forward each day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I created original oil paintings in my style. Florals, abstract, seascape, landscape. All my artwork is one of a kind. They are between realistic and abstract, so the viewers can have the idea it’s a flower but are not sure what kind. They are dream-like reflections or other effects.

I used my own techniques to apply and remove paint from canvas. I don’t use any reference points just own imagination. I do commission works sometimes I am visiting a place before or use an photos of interior to create a special piece. Customers describing to me all what they likes and don’t like. They choose a color palette and then I am creating.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The first and the most important you need to love what you do. Totally have a hangryness of doing that you love. Something you would do even no one will pay or recognize you.

So when those obstacles come, in the form of needing to work early in the morning or night, needing to travel thousands of miles, and with no very pleasant tasks, you are not going to give up. You love what you do, and nothing and no one will be on your way to success.

Very helpful for me is solo traveling. At that time, I am learning by visiting museums and galleries, connecting with new people, and getting inspiration. Traveling is essential practice for me and my development as an artist.
