Today we’d like to introduce you to Keysia Curry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Keysia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From as far as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for people. I was raised in a big Christian family with parents who modeled kindness, generosity and a heart for helping others. As a young child, until I was in my preteens, my family would pack up hundreds of bags of food and supplies each weekend, take them into our city’s downtown area and pass them out to as many homeless people as we could find. I would even watch my dad give the shirt off his back or the shoes off his feet for others. Growing up around people with a heart like this quickly made me have a heart like that as well. To the point where I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping and encouraging others.
While I feel very blessed to have the upbringing I had, things were not always sunshine and rainbows for me. Especially once I got out on my own, there were times where I dealt with verbal/emotional harassment making me feel worthless, ugly, stupid, and like my voice didn’t matter; a few instances of sexual harassment that left me feeling like I was just a piece of meat that men, even strangers, though they can say and do what they pleased; and instances where I was paralyzed by fear due to situations where I was chased, stalked, almost kidnapped, the list goes on. All these things, while tough, were the things that lit a fire in me to find a way to make a difference.
When I was 21, I started to pursue a passion I had for acting and singing. I ended up coming across a talent organization called AMTC – Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ and started attending their weekly Bible studies with other actors and the leader who was also a producer for a film called 8 days. Eight days had just been released, so there was a lot of buzz around the movie. The movie was based on a story of a young teenage girl trafficked for eight days straight as her family and friends tried tirelessly to find her. This was the first time I became aware of the issue of human trafficking and from then, could no longer turn a blind eye. I then spent the next few years, traveling around the world as a missionary in places like Africa, Middle East, and Israel, and joined an anti human trafficking team in Brazil, putting my face to face with oppressed women and victims sold into sex slavery. And let me tell you, once you are truly aware of the severity and reality of an issue like this, you are forever changed. My heart broke for these women because even though I don’t understand the capacity of their situation, I understood to the smallest extent from my past what it felt like to be treated in a way you did not ask for and feeling worthless. I knew that the rest of my life would be about encouraging women that they are ENOUGH and being a voice to those that can’t speak for themselves.
During these years, I was approached by my friend and former roommate, Leah, who had just launched her site, Crowns of Beauty, which was a blog that empowered women and brought awareness to the issue of human trafficking. She asked me to run with her and build this blog from the ground up, and I happily agreed! Her vision for Crowns of Beauty aligned perfectly with what I felt like I was put on this earth to do. Now, I am Director of Crowns of Beauty, along with Leah and my best friend Liza and our blog has become an up and coming non profit organization that gives women a platform to share their stories, celebrates what women are doing around the world, and partners with anti human trafficking organizations, shedding light on the horrendous issue of sex slavery through social media, video content, and written articles.
Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, Crowns of Beauty has been pretty smooth, but not without some bumps in the road. Leah, Liza, and I live in three different states, so running an organization together definitely has it’s difficulties at times, especially in the midst of our crazy lives and work schedules. However, we find a way to make it work. 🙂
Tell us more about your organization.
Crowns of Beauty is an up and coming non profit organization that exists to redefine the beauty of a woman in a world where women are often given distorted expectations on how to act and live. We desire to celebrate women in their unique beauty and empower them in their dreams/calling. One of the ways we do that is by giving the woman the platform to speak their stories and encourage each other through their experiences. You won’t only see Leah, Liza and I as in the content, you’ll see the woman from all ages, backgrounds, cultures, etc sharing stories and advice for other women to identify with. We started doing all that through written content like social media posts and blog articles and are now branching into the YouTube world. So we are super excited about that!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see Crowns of Beauty’s reach multiplying through the different avenues we will be taking on. Our hope is for COB to be a community! A place where women find friendship, identity and inner healing. I have no doubt we will be pumping out quality content on YouTube and finding ways to be a bigger part of ending human trafficking in our generation.
