Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Ruth Martinez.
Hi Kendra Ruth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As I prepared to graduate from ASU, I partnered with Arizona Interfaith Movement to develop an educational outreach teaching the Golden Rule in schools. Fast forward 10 years, I am now dedicated full-time to creating free educational resources for teachers to teach the Golden Rule in their classroom. I have seen how the Golden Rule impacts behavior firsthand, both in others and in myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For anyone who didn’t have a solid idea of what they wanted in a career, they can relate to the 8-year struggle to decide where I wanted to focus my time and energy. Arizona Golden Rule Educational Experiences (AGREE) was an opportunity that continued to remain open to me as I tried my hand in education, sales, food industry, and a variety of other career choices. I also spent a great deal of time traveling and unsure of how to “grow up”. As I explored different avenues, I continued to work for AGREE. First as a composer, then as an arts specialist, and as time went on, I found myself developing and leading in the organization and becoming fond of non-profit management. I now am the Development/School Liaison and continue to find my work fascinating and worthwhile.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a composer, I have written and produced a children’s cd for AGREE that teaches about the Golden Rule from a world perspective through folktales.
As a writer, I have penned scripts, worksheets, lyrics, presentations. and other resources that have moved the Golden Rule initiative forward in Arizona.
As a musician and singer, I have visited schools throughout Arizona, sharing original songs and playing my guitar for children to participate and enjoy.
As a storyteller, I have entered hundreds of classrooms as a special visitor to engage youth in story and conversation about the way we treat others and why it matters.
As a friend, and in the AGREE organization, I have connected with some of the most heartfelt and loving individuals I’ve ever met.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
