Meet Ken Liljegren of Spectrum Video & Film in North Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Liljegren.

Ken, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Spectrum Video in 1984, as a 21 year old looking for something interesting to do. My dad Don, owned one of the first video movie rental stores in the state and as part of his agreement with the distributor, he demoed RCA video equipment. I’d borrow the cameras and recording decks and go out and tape anything and everything – baby pageants, dance events and lip synch contests. I would edit and sell the finished tapes. Providing customers a tape of their participation was a new concept and with the addition of Fred Astaire as a client, I took it a step further and began editing the tapes on the spot, so customers could take them home with them rather than wait for them in the mail.

As I grew more comfortable behind the camera, and with the equipment, I began looking for more clients and bigger projects. I was hired by a local auction house and I produced a 30-second TV spot, and his sales tripled. That was a high point from the early days.

Through the years, I kept investing in the latest equipment and continued learning along the way earning the business of larger clients.

I now own my own facility with three edit bays, a sound booth and a studio.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had to keep up with the technology which is changing constantly. I had to be very strategic about equipment purchases, knowing how quickly cameras and editing systems were becoming obsolete. The industry has changed at a fast-paced clip.

Please tell us about Spectrum Video & Film.
Spectrum is a full-service video production and event company. We have produced 4000 videos from training to safety to marketing. We produce infomercials, have a TV show “Paranormal Matrix” on Amazon Video and are in post-production on a documentary.

I am most proud of our ability to grow our services over the years. We do webcasts; projection, lighting and sound; and even provide the pipe and drape for the events we cover.

One of the most interesting projects we do is providing the audio and lighting for the Fiesta Bowl team arrivals and post-game press conferences and media days. I love being out in the field at events like the Fiesta Bowl media days. There is such an energy when you are involved in live events.

And, I enjoy nurturing new talent.

What sets us apart from the others is our experience.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Moving from Chicago to Phoenix, when I was 13 is my favorite childhood memory. My parents had purchased a Baskin-Robbins franchise and it was exciting to be involved in that startup and to work for them.
