Meet Kelsey Self of Self Performance Fitness in North Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Self.

Kelsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from college I began my career in marketing. I didn’t mind the work, but I didn’t like being indoors working in offices all the time, and I didn’t like being restricted to such a strict schedule. I always looked forward to going to the gym after work. I played sports growing up and always enjoyed movement and being outdoors. I had a personal trainer once and it seemed like something that would be a good fit for me. I decided to start studying for my Training certification, and in 2015, I quit my job to go into business for myself. I have since had the opportunity to work with hundreds of amazing clients through one-on-one sessions and group classes. I love the feeling I get from helping someone realize how strong they truly are.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur is never easy. Sometimes it feels like there is a lot of pressure because you don’t want to fail. And there is always more work to be done. Being a solo-entrepreneur can be especially challenging because at times you find yourself in these difficult situations and don’t have any business partners or co-workers to turn to for help.

Please tell us about your business.
Self Performance Fitness specializes in fitness for women. I offer one-on-one training and small group training (up to 4 women at a time). I help women realize their true potential. By cultivating physical strength, we build mental strength and resilience. What sets me apart as a trainer is my ability to be compassionate, but still hold my clients accountable.

I’m most proud of helping my clients achieve long-lasting results. I don’t do quick fixes. Nothing makes me happier than to see how someone has been able to improve aspects of their entire life by taking time out for themselves and focusing on their physical fitness.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Resilience. There were plenty of times along the way where the easiest option would have been to quit, and return to a corporate job in marketing, or go get a job as a trainer for a big corporate gym, but it was important to me to be my own boss and to always figure out a way forward.
