Meet Kelly Yu, Jade Palace Shea of Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine in Glendale & Peoria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Yu, Jade Palace Shea.

Kelly Yu, co-owns Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine with her aunt Lisa Selamat, Yu has come a long way since her first job at a McDonald’s in Hong Kong. However, her dream of establishing an authentic, family-owned restaurant has never waivered.

When Kelly moved to America in 2004, she continued to garner restaurant experience, including the importance of customer service as well as preparing and serving fresh high-quality ingredients, gaining this knowledge at fine dining establishments such as Jade Palace in Scottsdale. Kelly then attended bartending school where she learned to make cocktails and specialty drinks. “That gave me the opportunity to try a lot of wine, liquor and cocktails that helped me develop our drink menu and wine selections at Kawaii,” says Kelly. She also began managing kitchen staff and learning everything it took to create a great dining experience for every customer. “All of that translates to a better experience now for everyone who enjoys Kawaii,” she adds.

Yu opened her first location in Glendale, Arizona in 2014. The success of Kawaii “K1” led to another Kawaii “K2” location in Peoria in 2018.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Kawaii has been a success not just because of the food and excellent service but because of the community support. Something that Kawaii returns the favor for as they are doing a lot of community and public relations. Kawaii sponsors numerous schools, sports programs, music programs, police and fire departments, and many more. There has been a lot of local support going both ways.

Some of the struggles would be training new employees and hiring many first time workers. But Kawaii believes in giving young students an opportunity to learn and gain work experience.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine – what should we know?
Kawaii is not just a sushi restaurant but more Asian fusion specializing in traditional Chinese entrees. The menu is expansive and has something for everyone to enjoy. We are known for our fresh sushi and amazing specialty rolls. We are most proud of our family recipes. Our family-friendly fun environment sets us apart from other places as Kawaii is known for always being a place to have a good time or share some drinks with a diverse alcohol menu with Sake’s, imported beers, unique cocktails, and fine wines.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
