Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Gannon.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for learning about new things and travel. When we were relocating to Arizona from the East Coast, it seemed like an opportunity to share that experience with other people. If I can highlight an experience that I’ve had that encourages other people to want to try or learn something new, I feel like that’s a privilege.
Social and online media are the next generation in marketing and communication. It’s also the most effective way for me to be able to share and highlight our experiences. I’ve been working in media my entire professional career, I started in radio and slowly migrated to television. Following finishing my MBA at Fordham University in New York, I went to work with CBS. During my time in the news division, I garnered valuable skills and really discovered a passion for learning other people’s stories and experiences. Now working with my own social media brand I’m able to really focus on telling the stories I want to tell and sharing that on a personal level.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think every journey has some stumbles and that provides huge learning opportunities. When I started The Gannon Edit, I was on my own. I no longer had the backing of a recognizable brand that I could fall back on, so I had to build my own credibility. That’s something that takes time. First, I had to start producing content that people found relatable and high quality. From there, as I started working with additional clients, I was able to build a business based on reputation. It’s great to be able to consistently deliver for them, sharing their stories and always trying to go above and beyond.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Gannon Edit – what should we know?
Essentially I promote people, brands and events. I’m able to do this by sharing the stories behind the brands and real-life interactions.
I’m proud that I’m able to be creative in sharing a brand’s story. It’s not a typical promotion piece to tell me about your company and what makes it interesting. By being able to help draw awareness to new experiences and brands via online media I’m able to utilize videos, photos, and social media to tell a story. There isn’t a time limit on telling that story, we don’t have to cut to commercial, we don’t have a 30 second hard stop on a commercial… I get to tell the story and share the interaction on multiple levels and make it personal. Online media is a gift for brands because there is so much latitude that we are afforded in being able to share the message.
How do you define success?
To me, the ultimate definition of success is the ability to do what you are passionate about while gaining financial security in the process. I’m able to get up every day and have a new experience, learn something new and tell someone’s story. That’s a gift. I’m especially appreciative of the opportunity to be able to draw attention to Phoenix and the Southwest. It’s a whole new region for us being from the Northeast. Supporting local is important to me. To be able to help bring awareness to local and regional brands and to see them grow is absolutely a source of pride. The icing on the cake is that my kids get to see me doing something I love. Hopefully, they are learning that part of success is that passion you feel for what you do.
