Meet KJ Dillard

Today we’d like to introduce you to KJ Dillard.

Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Phoenix, Arizona. I lived here until I was ten years old. Once after that, my mom, my sisters and I all moved to Kansas City, Missouri. I lived in Kansas City until I was 20 years old. Throughout my childhood, I loved to play sports like ice hockey, baseball, basketball, and football. I got my athletic genes from my dad, who is a former pro baseball player. Fortunately, none of those ever really stuck with me because I discovered skateboarding. I was 12 when I really started to engage in skateboarding. It has helped me a lot mentally throughout my years of growing up. I’ve dealt with bullying, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm. Skateboarding was always my outlet and has made me the person that I am today. I have met so many great people and made so many wonderful friendships. When I was 19, I invented a viral trick that got on Berrics, Street League Skateboarding, and Fox News. It has changed my life completely, and I am very thankful for that moment. I am now 23 years old, I am a signed model and I still skateboard till this day.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not. It has been a very bumpy road. Some of the struggles along the way have been between me, myself, and I. For years I’ve struggled with mental health disorders such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and OCD. Those conditions alone have affected my career negatively. I used to overthink everything and still do. Another struggle of mine has been the dissatisfaction of my accomplishments, but now I’m learning how to appreciate my achievements because it’s gotten me to be where I am today.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m an artist that specializes in skateboarding, modeling, and acting. I am known for following my dreams and never giving up, which is what I am most proud of. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a go-getter and work harder than anybody. Everyday I wake up thinking of new and innovative ways to raise the bar in my industries.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was energetic and could never ever sit still. Personality and interest wise I’ve always been quirky and into arcade games, black history, classic movies, contemporary art, community service, creative writing, film photography, individual sports, old music, reading biographies, street fashion, and world traveling.
