Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayli Schattner.
Kayli, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been a driven, ambitious person. Think of that girl in high school that served in as many leadership positions as she could, got serious joy from internships and read the dictionary for fun as a kid (sigh).
In 2013, I was working for a corporate marketing company while in college doing anything but work that felt like a joy to me. I would go around Walmart’s selling displays, making sure the managers had the product marketing tools they needed, etc. You get the picture.
This was also a couple of years on my lifestyle blog, Kayli Wanders. I loved that blog and although I started it for myself, it grew a following (kind of out of nowhere — the joys of having an online space back in the day) and that’s when it happened.
While I was talking to a reader who I’d connected with through Kayli Wanders, she tagged me in a tweet (ha – how foretelling!) that a PR guru in San Francisco was looking someone to handle her social media and a variety of other tasks.
That day I recorded a video explaining why I’d love the position (a position I didn’t even know existed — who got to be on social media for their job?), filled-out some questions + was given the role on-the-spot.
I took it, ran with it, hustled hard + never looked back. Three months in I had built up a client base and was able to quit the corporate gig. Hell yes.
And while I was gaining confidence in the business world, building my network + client base like crazy, I discovered something: While working from home, the deep in-person connections I craved were far + few between.
I was in a deeply unhappy long-term relationship with my high school boyfriend whom I lived with, most of my friends went ‘away’ to college + believe it or not, it’s, like, way harder to make friends in your 4 pm yoga class than the movies make it out to be.
Then one day, it clicked out of nowhere (or maybe since I had been dwelling on it for a while, a little bit more like somewhere): I loved being an older sister. I loved being someone for people to look up to. But I craved a community of strong women that shared my values and wanted to dive into the same things I was so excited over. A tribe for me to navigate life with.
It’s 2014, I go on a coffee date with a girl who talks the whole time about her internship at a Government PR firm + the volunteering she’s been doing, who asks me about the deep stuff right off the bat…and then goes to get ready for a party before the ASU game. Someone that likes to kickass in the workplace and pop a bottle every now and then? Just yes. To make another long story short, she recruited me for her sorority, I was lucky enough to meet more of those women I spent so much time praying for and the rest is history.
In 2015, I ditched the boyfriend and the limiting beliefs + gained, really, my whole life. Friends who became family, a college experience that felt like the one I had imagined and, admitabbly, tons of life lessons that came along with being a 20-something.
And that my friends, is the long story short (?) of how this blog, my career + the pod came about: I had to #OwnIt (it being the normal misgivings that come with being a Mill Avenue junkie, a business owner in a world where there’s a clear track to success, my love for saving on a Full Moon + realizing that I can be everything I am all at once. Simultaneously. Because that’s being human.)
And how much happier life gets when you stand firm in that.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like any good thing in life, there have been plenty of obstacles along the way! First off, while I’m a proud Arizona State alum, my major did not prepare me for the business world. Being successful in the world of marketing and PR required dedication, perseverance and a willingness to learn — three attributes that I continue to uphold myself to. I’d spend hours taking online courses to hone my craft, attend networking events with people much more experienced than I was and I’d devour anything that had to do with areas I knew very little about… looking at you, taxes!
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kayli Schattner | #OwningIt with Kayli Schattner Podcast – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m an Online Marketing and Content Strategist, which is a fancy way of saying that I help businesses create plans to reach their goals through strategic blogging, newsletter, social media and influencer efforts. I specialize in curating copy that reaches their dream market and brings in the profit they deserve through authentic interactions. I take so much pride in the fact that my clients truly crave genuine connections with their audiences and love that that’s what the Kayli Schattner brand is known for.
As for #OwningIt and the KayliSchattner.com brand? I don’t know if that can be summed up in a “specialty” — because, really? I just strive to make 20-somethings feel less alone and more equipped on their crazy winding road into adulthood. Being in your 20’s is synonymous with the unknown + too many people feel isolated in their journeys. #OwningIt aims to bring women together to create a community where they feel empowered, supported and celebrated — I like to say I live by the 3 “E’s” — Emphasize, Enlighten and Encourage!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how many dedicated local business owners there are in Phoenix! We’re truly a booming city with so much to offer — Farm & Craft, Provision Coffee, Paige Poppe, Sip, Thrive CoWorking Space, CitizenHD — I could go on for hours.
I do wish Phoenix had better public transportation, but with people like the fabulous graphic designer, Quinn Tempest, contributing to this issue at the city level I know we’re on the right track!
