Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Becton.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been a visual, creative-minded person. Growing up, the margins of my papers were always filled with doodles and my notes with visual depictions of what I was learning. Along with fun doodles and cartoons, visualizing, drawing charts and creating organized and easy-to-follow layouts was something I loved to do. In high school, I spontaneously decided to take a graphic design class as an elective, just because I thought it might be fun. Little did I know, it would soon become one of my favorite ways to express my creativity through visual artwork. My freshman year of college I purchased my first DSLR camera, which opened a whole new door of opportunity for me. I got the chance to try some event photography through my job and photojournalism in my degree program and fell in love! Now, I seek to combine these two mediums in any way I can through my own personal freelance work. I’m so grateful that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to channel my passion for creating into my professional work!
Please tell us about your art.
I am a graphic designer and photographer, but I mostly create branding packages and marketing for my work. One quote that inspires my work is “Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent.” (- Joe Sparano) I feel like this quote does a great job of reflecting my primary goal as a designer: to make sure the message of my design is more obvious than the design itself. I feel like design is done most masterfully when it contains beauty and creativity, but also seamlessly communicates the point so that the message is clear. If I can communicate effectively and leave people inspired by my work, that is the best takeaway for them that I could ask for!
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
One challenge I face and see fellow artists deal with constantly is the struggle of balancing time and resources. While spending time and money on something you are passionate about is rewarding, the demands of everyday life don’t always leave much room for it. Hearing fellow artist friends vent about the struggle of being torn to choose between pursuing their passion full time and making ends meet is so sad to me, but unfortunately that is the reality we live in. The solution to this general issue may not be easy to find, but I think if we work together as artists it can make the burdened a little easier to carry. Sometimes attending a gallery, going to a live show, or even moral support can go a long way to help our artist friends!
