Meet Kayisha Diggins of Esthetics by Kandy in South Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayisha Diggins.

Kayisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Kandy is a Licensed Esthetician with certified training in Microblading & Ombre Powdered Brows. She is located in the Phoenix/Tempe area in Arizona. She is a sterile technique and Blood-borne Pathogen certified and trained. She specializes in Waxing and Vajacials. I originally started working from home and then moved into Fly Girls Beauty Bar which is a black-owned one stop shop for all your beauty needs. We have nails, pedicures, hair styling, barbering, braiding, Yoni steams and a tattoo artist on one side and lash techs, estheticians and MUA on the other side. ONE-STOP SHOP!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t always been smooth, I originally started taking clients from home as soon as I passed state board. Many people as soon as they finish school cannot branch out on their own or get a job right away. For me it was different. Once I posted photos of my waxing work I started to build my clientele very quickly in the black market. Someone I used to be very close with reported to the state board that I was working from home. It’s funny because when the state board finally did get a hold of me Angie (Owner of Fly Girls Salon) reached out to me to come work at her shop. I let the state board know I was working for her and that was the end of that.

Please tell us about you business.
So my waxing was a hit, conquering waxing wasn’t my original goal in this industry it was lashing. But lashes and I just don’t get along. There are a lot of estheticians that offer waxing and a lot of waxing companies out here in the valley but I wanted something different. Vajacials came along through my girlfriend, I waxed her for the first time and realized she had a lot of ingrown. She complained about them hurting so much as I was taking them out so I thought like an esthetician and asked her if she didn’t mind if I blew steam on her top part of her vagina to help open up her pores, as the steam was blowing she wasn’t complaining anymore. So now I’m like hmm could this be something and BOOM Vajacials was created. To my knowledge, I was the only one offering these in Arizona. Now it’s my number one booked service. Vajacials help with ingrown hairs and hyperpigmentation.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being a woman myself who waxes and I fear pain, I had to come up with a solution for a less painful waxing experience. That’s what I concentrated on at school. What technique is the least painful, what wax products would make waxing hurt less. Me focusing on making waxing less painful is what helps contribute to my success!
