Meet Katie Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Torres.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in the desert of Phoenix Arizona where I grew up my entire life. I was given my first camera, a Pentax k1000 film camera when I was 14 years old. I had no clue what a film camera was or how to use it. So I carried the paper manual and camera with me and began adventuring. I have always had a huge love for the outdoors and quickly decided that this is how I would teach myself to use this amazing device. Film taught me the virtue of patience and how to slow down and take in all my surroundings. This film camera showed me where my true passion lies in the beauty of landscapes and the people within them! Using film and digital, I now focus on portraits and weddings primarily.

Please tell us about your art.
I create and capture the incredible things I see around me through the use of film and digital photography. In all my work I strive to bring out the raw beauty within each individual I get to take photographs of. I hope to inspire people around me through my work, but more importantly, I want the subject to feel empowered through looking at their own image of themselves that I create.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
As the world has changed and will only continue to do so the role of artists has become all the more important. Our goal as artists should be to speak out through our work and support one another.
