Meet Kathrine Breeden of Kathrine Breeden in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathrine Breeden.

Kathrine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am obsessed with dogs! Dogs, dogs and more dogs! That’s why, I’m a professional canine behavior consultant! I was born and raised in a dairy county in England – surrounded by loving cows, horses and dogs throughout my childhood. I moved to Dallas, TX in 1999 and brought my horse with me! I became heavily involved with dog rescue and by chance ended up working in a doggy daycare facility and was introduced to the world of dog training. Over the last 15 years, I have earned various educational achievements and a wealth of experience. I am what’s known as a “Force Free Trainer”. This means, I never do anything or use any tool that will hurt, frighten, startle or intimidate a dog. Having a thorough understanding of canine behavior means I have no need for those methods or tools. There is no shock, choke or prong collars in my toolkit! Numerous veterinarians, happy clients, groomers, pet sitters and other dog trainers and pet professionals recommend me. I offer a variety of services including pre-puppy and pre-baby preparation, service dog consults and private one on one training to clients in their own homes, as well as going out with them to parks, restaurants and stores to teach them how to set their dog up to be successful. I also offer educational events addressing specific subjects for veterinarians, groomers and pet sitters. I have successfully worked with dogs with aggression, extreme fear, reactivity, separation anxiety and all manner of normal and sometimes abnormal behaviors! Constantly striving to see things through the dogs’ eyes is crucial and I believe that is a contributing factor to the success I have in improving the lives of dogs and their pet parents! Giving back to the community is a priority for me and to that end, I volunteer countless hours and as many dollars as I can to animal rescue organizations and local rescue groups.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life has a way of throwing curved balls in our way doesn’t it? One of the biggest challenges I faced was in 2013, when my husband was offered a wonderful job that would have been madness to decline, so we moved from Texas to Arizona and I had to start my business from scratch again. It was so hard leaving all my friends, clients and professional contacts behind. The silver lining was that, I got to meet a whole load of new people and make great new friends.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kathrine Breeden – what should we know?
I specialize in canine behavior – I provide private training as opposed to group classes.

I am a voracious networker and one of my favorite things is to help other small businesses to flourish. I’m known for being force free – meaning, I never do anything or use any tool that hurts, frightens, startles or intimidates a dog. This is a fundamental principle for me.

I’m most proud of the fact that my clients achieve outstanding results in an appropriate period of time for an affordable fee and have fun doing so!

What sets me apart from others is my high level of knowledge and experience of canine behavior which in turn, enables me to resolve canine behavior problems without recourse to aversive techniques.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being an effective, confident communicator is essential in this business. Most dogs are considered precious family members and my success depends on my ability to educate clients how to educate their dogs. A sense of humor is definitely important – when a dog empties her bladder in your lap you’d better be ready to laugh!

Running a small business requires a broad range of knowledge including some understanding of marketing, sales, taxation, insurance and the law. I am fortunate that I have had experience in previous careers of all of those areas so I am able to run my business without falling victim to the usual pitfalls.
