Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Cwik.
Katelyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a freelance social media marketer. I graduated from ASU in December 2018, with a bachelor degree in Graphic Information Technology. There I studied photography, videography, print design, web design, and social media. I was lucky enough to get a job at Shoe Thrill in Downtown Chandler during college. This was a retail job that turned into running their social media. From there, I received an internship with Lauren Snow Beauty, to help redo her blog, do photoshoots, events, and run her company’s social media. Fast forward to Summer 2018, I started working at the Chandler Chamber of Commerce as their social media marketer. Not only did I work for the Chamber, but I worked directly with some of the companies involved with the Chamber evolve their social media. This included educational presentations, one on one marketing sessions, and more! I learned so much about business from working with the companies.
My favorite part would be the thank you notes I received after I helped fix their problem or help them promote an event that turned out extremely successful! I parted ways with the Chamber in Spring 2019, and continue to help educate small businesses in social media. I believe it is a powerful tool that everyone should have access to, that everyone should have knowledge of. I am here to level the playing field. To be able to sit down with people and explain exactly how to use Instagram. Not only how to market with it and use it effectively, but what each button means and what it does. I was born with an entrepreneurial spirit, it runs through my blood. I hope to build my company to more than just me and be able to reach more companies to educate and help them evolve their social media.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur at 22 isn’t the easiest. I am a very focused and detail-oriented person. Although to make yourself sit down and work every day, with no one but your clients keeping you on track, can be hard. Making it even harder, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease this spring. Dealing with an autoimmune disorder at such a young age has been hard. Relearning how your body works, trying to balance hormones, and not being able to eat things you’ve eaten all your life has been hard. But I’ve never been one to roll over and let things happen to me. I’ve decided to become an advocate. Blog posts and videos coming soon. As for how this health shock has affected my work life, brain fog has been the most detrimental. Not being able to focus as much as I used to in the most important part of my career is scary. Straight up scary. Taking the correct vitamins and diet has helped tremendously.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Freelance social media is my baby. This typically involves running a company’s Instagram and Facebook. I’m in charge of sourcing content, creating engaging captions and utilizing the correct hashtags. As well as engaging with our followers and other accounts. This is to generate leads, brand style, and get the company noticed. I also do photography and videography for clients, as well as educational sessions.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Knowing that everything will work out is what has been the most important to me in my success. If I work hard and stay focused then something good will come from it, it may not be what I want, but in the end, I’ll turn out just fine. Give it to God.
