I’m a failed actor turned entrepreneur, author, speaker, and a pretentious blowhard.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
LOL, no it has not.

Early in my career, I was building banking applications. That felt like a pretty safe place to be until the banks started going under. I was in the building at First National Bank (the largest privately owned bank in the US at the time) on bank failure Friday when the FDIC showed up and started kicking down doors.

The beginning of my entrepreneurial career also happened to coincide with the beginning of the not-so-great recession. When the banks went down, so did my business. I bought my first home at 20 years old. I lost it to repossession at 22 :-). My car was repossessed shortly after that. Credit card debt galore followed.

As I was trying to rebuild my business I was working on a laptop that my stepmother gave me that didn’t have a battery. If I wasn’t near a plug, I couldn’t power up. I would go to client meetings and tell people that I didn’t carry a batter on purpose because it could overheat in the car. I used to go to Costco on the weekends (using my expired Costco card) so I could wander around and eat the free-try-outs, that was usually lunch.

That might have been the best thing that ever happened to me.

Before the proverbial shit hit the economic fan, I was making more money than an early-20-something should make and I was spending it as fast as I could get my hands on it. Had I not been so humbled I don’t think I ever would have really learned the value of money.
