Meet Kalynn Frechette of Moody Aromas LLC in Ahwatukee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalynn Frechette.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kalynn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started making candles as a hobby in 2015 and then decided to create Moody Aromas LLC in May of 2017. We then launched an online store and started promoting our products at local events around the Phoenix valley. We also have opened a store in the front of our home in Ahwatukee that is by appointment only allowing customers to have a one on one shopping experience and the ability to shop/smell all of our scents.

Our goal is to provide a quality, handmade candle that would carry a strong scent for the entire life of the candle at an affordable price. We take pride in knowing every ingredient that goes into each candle. All of our products are handmade right here in our home in Ahwatukee.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

One struggle I had along the way was becoming well known in the valley. Making a new product along with getting brand awareness is difficult in such a big city with so much competition. I have found customers are wary of trying new candles out, so many brands have become expensive and the quality has gone down through the years. I had to overcome being compared to Gold Canyon constantly and having to show the value of my candles. I had to prove to my customers that Moody Aromas candles have cleaner ingredients, they provide a strong scent that fills their homes, and they are for an affordable price (our burn times are 10-90 hours depending on size).

Secondly, a big struggle that I have had is managing being a new mom while running the business. My little one is 11 months old and full of life. I spend half of my time being a stay at home mom and the other half of my time working on business-related items. It has been difficult to separate my time and the mom guilt is so real! When I am working I feel like I should be spending time with my child and when I am with my child I feel like I should be working. There are a lot of pros to managing both as well though. Sometimes he even helps me sell the candles while customers are shopping at the store at our residential location in Ahwatukee providing smiles and giggles to our customers.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is handmade wood wick candles. I am known in the valley as the candle lady and for the wood wicks which provide a crackle while they burn and for a cleaner candle that uses essential oils. I specialize in doing custom labels for real estate agents, business owners who want to thank their customers and custom gifts. I am proud of the growth and love of my customers that the business has brought. I put in a lot of hard work in order to get where I am today and that has been really cool to see. My customers are also something I am very proud of, they have shown so much love by sharing their candles on social media posts, referring their friends/family and being loyal to my brand. Many of my customers have been buying from me since we opened in May of 2017. What sets me apart from other companies is my personality, the fact that I am very involved in the business and that the candles are handmade by me.

Our candles have a few major benefits to our customers. Since we have no added chemicals, and many are blended with essential oils, we offer a cleaner scent and cleaner burn. Because of these differences that set us a part, many of our users who have had physical reactions to the chemicals in other candles have experienced the comfort and warmth of a candle without the ill side effects. The wax is a high-quality blend that provides a lasting scented candle with burn times between 10-90 hours depending on the size. Currently, we offer over 50 different scents in a variety of sizes.

Our candles have many unique qualities; wooden wicks, colorful labels, clever names, and customization options. Not only are the wood wicks different from the traditional cotton wicks; they come with the added benefit of being 100% natural with no added chemicals such as zinc, lead, or any other metals like some major candle companies. The colorful labels make for great centerpieces, and fun, vibrant gifts. We can also personalize labels on all of our products making any occasion special. We’ll even take requests to create new scents!

What were you like growing up?
I have always been a person with a strong personality and natural leadership skills. I was interested mostly in sports and the creation of things. You could find me in art class, woodshop, and ceramics if I wasn’t outside shooting hoops or hanging out with my friends. I have always been one to craft my own projects, for example, most of my house is full of DIY projects that I have done. I have always enjoyed knowing exactly what is in my food and going on my body which is what prompted the start of making my own candles.
