Meet Kalin Harding of Surprise Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalin Harding.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kalin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner board certified to care for ages 0-100. I have been in healthcare since 2001. During this time, I worked in family practice, urgent care, and retail health. Throughout the years, I have watched the family practice model fail patients when their support was needed most.

I graduated from Purdue University with my Master’s in Nursing in 2013 and worked for a large retail clinic. From this experience, I learned that most patients are frustrated with their lack of access to their primary care providers. Sometimes waiting over a week before they can get an appointment for a sick visit or a simple refill on a medication. There’s also financial barriers, and we know them well as “the deductible, the co-pay” that often keeps people away for a well visit which could prevent them from needing a sick visit. At Surprise Care, we remove all of those cumbersome problems to truly offer affordable healthcare at the “speed of life”.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has defiantly been bumpy along the way, it sure is hard to quantify the dedication that it takes to go to school while raising three kids! I always tell my new Nurse Practitioner students that I started as a medical assistant and then kept going back to school, and I have learned something in every role. My husband and I moved here from Indiana this past January with the goal of opening a medical practice that truly embodies what affordable healthcare should be and we’ve done it! April 1st was opening day and we have 100 member-patients.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Surprise Care – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Surprise Care is a Direct Primary Care or (DPC) medical clinic that removes the medical middleman so providers can focus on patient care. Let’s be very clear on how the healthcare system works now because “Coverage does not equal Care”. Many of our patients have some sort of “coverage” but lack access to any care until they reach a $5-7,000 deductible.

We specialize in those patients who have high deductibles and high co-pays who will not qualify for any state medical insurance because they make too much. What sets Surprise Care apart from other traditional primary care models is we do not file with third party insurance companies, limiting the amount of patients per provider (600 per NP), and giving each patient the personal phone number of each provider for text messages, phone calls, and video-chats visits.

Surprise Care does not support patients to go without any medical insurance, in fact quite the contrary, every patient should have catastrophic coverage in case of a stroke, heart attack, etc. Surprise Care supports you wherever you’re at.
