Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaleb Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kaleb. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a single-parent household by my mom. She instilled in me that hard work, the value of keeping a good reputation, loyalty and my walk with Christ will take me far. Growing up, I was faced with many challenges. During 3rd grade, I was falling behind my peers due to a learning disability. I was provided an IEP and speech pathologist to help with my stutter. And to add to that a father who moved out of state. This left me feeling alone.
During this time of my most impressionable years, my mom always prayed over me, provided me the tools and resources to be successful. She never let me use my challenges as a crutch and always told me that God has a plan for my life. She would encourage me to learn about other successful people who had a stutter and how they overcame their challenges. This motivated me to do my very best in school and to just be myself. I became a leader among my peers and led by example. During my elementary years, I fell in love with the game of basketball. I went on to high school wanting to excel in school, and make the varsity basketball team.
My hard work paid off. I reached all my milestones for my IEP and transitioned into classes with my peers and became the varsity team captain my sophomore-senior year. In 2019 I lead my team to the first playoffs since 2012. My goal was to earn a full-ride basketball scholarship and I did just that. Once playing at the college level and really taking everything in as now a young adult, I came to a realization that I am really more than an athlete and wanted to pursue more for myself and what God has in store for me. Joining the military has always been something on my heart for some time so I decided it was the right time to pursue this next chapter in my life.
As I continue my studies and prepare for the military, I started a podcast. I wanted to share my experiences with young adults that may be facing challenges of their own and need some encouragement. My podcast New Level helps me express myself, share my experiences/challenges and how God works them for good. My story is not done. I continue to be a work in progress and look forward to my future and how God will continue to use me.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has not been smooth but I know that all that I’ve gone through has shaped me into the young man I am today. Some of my struggles include not having my dad around, but I’ve been fortunate to have some great male mentors in my life. Having a speech impediment has been another struggle but something I continue to work on and use it as a platform to show others that they can do anything they put their mind to.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I just recently started my own podcast called New Level. I’m learning as I go and excited to share my life experiences and struggles. Where most people with a stutter would shy away of speaking to an audience, I’m proud to be starting this podcast to be an example and encouragement to others.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think with the technology we have today, almost anything is possible and you can start many businesses online or via social media. Phoenix continues to grow and it seems like a place that welcomes small business owners.
