Meet Julio Leal of Jay’s Shotz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julio Leal.

Hi Julio, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up playing basketball, both for the city I lived in and the schools I attended. As an adult, I coached city teams to give back to my community. As my children began their own sports journeys, I realized how much I enjoyed capturing moments between them and their teammates. That’s where my love for photography began. The encouragement of those around me, motivated me to sharpen my skills, grow my platform, and eventually start my own business. I look forward to the continued growth and development of my craft.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a beginner in photography, I didn’t understand the complexity of taking pictures. I had to learn the importance of lighting, focus, composition, and editing. I had to find the right equipment to achieve the quality I was seeking. I also realized I needed to build relationships in order to expand my reach. As a father, husband, and full-time employee, I struggled with balancing my time between all those roles in my life.

Jay’s Shotz specializes in sports photography, capturing live action shots for teams, athletes, and events. I focus on delivering clear, exciting photos that showcase key moments and help athletes remember their achievements. What sets me apart from others is that I work really hard to make sure my prices are cost effective to allow more athletes and their families to enjoy high quality photos. I’m proud of how I’ve grown as a photographer, constantly learning new techniques, improving my timing, and refining my editing style so my work stands out. While I greatly enjoy sports photography, I am looking forward to venturing into new avenues, like family photos, senior pictures, graduation photos, and many more.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
As a current employee of the City of Surprise, my favorite thing is seeing the growth and expansion of the area, and I’ve enjoyed watching local businesses flourish here. I currently don’t have any complaints about the city.
