Meet Julian Wyatt of Prison Yoga Project Phoenix in Maricopa County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Wyatt.

Julian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I teach yoga and meditation in the jail systems. Specially, Lower Buckeye Jail is for Incarcerated Juvenile boys and girls, ages 15-17. Estrella jail is where we teach Incarcerated Women, Durango jail is for Incarcerated Men and Towers Jail is for Incarcerated Veterans.

The organization is 100% volunteer based and our Facebook page is Prison Yoga Project Phoenix.

Recently, we have partnered with the Mosaic Program for Substance Abuse and Mental Health at MCSO and are loving the experience.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a phenomenal experience working with staff, Detention Officers and Inmates.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Prison Yoga Project Phoenix story. Tell us more about the business.
We are most proud of the Evidenced Based Research surrounding these practices. The media coverage has been overwhelming. We cover 16 individual core concepts that include meditation and yoga.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
Active Recruitment of Volunteers, a path to certification for inmates, prison yoga training or school in the area, greater reach in more jails, teaming up with other service agencies that work with restorative justice, etc.
