Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Loretta.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Eastern MA, USA, and experienced a childhood rich with exposure to the arts and encouragement to create.
I remember my Mom recording Bob Ross episodes, setting up easels and buying all the necessary paints so my sister and I could work along with him.
During these early years, one of my Mom’s occupations was as a portrait and still-life artist, and my Dad made beautiful wooden furniture from a home studio.
I have taken solace in creative expression throughout life, beginning with oil painting as a girl. I have connected with a wide variety of mediums, focusing in ceramics at Green Mountain College where I received my BFA in 2011, and falling in love with watercolors for a time, but always returning to oil paints.
I now live in Sedona, AZ, USA, where I create my abstract landscapes from a home studio.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth, and I very much feel that I’m in the beginning stages of the where I want to go with my art.
My greatest challenge is the belief in myself and that what I create matters.
What should we know about your artwork? What do you do best? What sets you apart from others?
I work with oil painting and am known both for my gentle, abstract landscapes and space/nebula work.
I paint as a form of communication, a way to offer healing and to honor the grace of life.
I gain inspiration from my deep love for the natural world, my connection with stillness and observation of natural rhythms.
My paintings come from a meditative place where energy and emotions are expressed through a language of color and movement.
These abstract landscapes speak to the space between reality and dreams; waking and sleep. They are created to offer a healing, restorative space for the viewer to rest and reflect, knowing that anything is possible beyond the horizon.
Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
My favorite thing about Phoenix is that my in-laws live there!
My least favorite thing is how hot it is right now!
