Meet Julia Loretta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Loretta.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in Framingham, MA, lucky enough to have creative parents who appreciate fine art.
My Mom worked as a still-life and portrait artist part-time while I was growing up, and there was always some artistic project going on in the house.

I started oil painting somewhere around the age of 8. My Mom, older sister and I would record Bob Ross episodes, buy all the necessary paints and materials and then work along with him, pausing the show when we needed to.

It was in high school that I started experimenting with abstract work, painting and drawing from my dreams as well as what felt like an energetic movement.

I went to Waldorf schools for a brief time and graduated from High Mowing School in NH, which is the only Waldorf boarding school in the US, so my educational experience was also a very creative one.

I then went to Green Mountain College in VT, where I focused both on oil painting and ceramics, receiving my BFA from them in 2011.

Since then, I have been enjoying various mediums from graphite to watercolor, and really only returned to oil paints, my original love as far as artistic mediums, a year and a half ago! From there, I have delved into the abstract landscape world, which feels like a very natural and organic avenue for me.

Please tell us about your art.
I create abstract/contemporary landscapes using oil paint.

My paintings are surreal, dream-like scapes that live between worlds. They’re inspired by my love for nature and my fascination with the dualities life presents, honoring both the darkness and light.

The intention in leaving so much open space in my paintings is to offer a space for restoration, healing, and reflection. That space is up for interpretation, becoming whatever support system is needed by the viewer.

The message is that beyond the horizon, anything is possible.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think everything along my path happened for a reason, so I have no regrets, but I would encourage anyone interested to seek out supportive online classes in business and marketing. I’ve only just started doing this, and it has been very helpful.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
