Meet Julia Gorchakova of Artistry In Motion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Gorchakova.

Julia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been dancing since I was 6 years old, I came to the US when I was 17. My passion in life is ballroom dancing.

My husband, Bob Powers, have won 12 US championship and 3 mambo championships and retired in 2004. I started a couture ballroom dress company for custom ballroom dresses in 1997.

I make dresses for amateur and professional dancers. I also have a reality series called Design Republic TV about life of ballroom dancers on YouTube. Currently, I am working on getting all of my customers ready for the big Arthur Murray competition in Vegas at the end of October, as well as the famous Ohio Star Ball in November (the one shown on PBS).

We have very tight deadlines and a lot of clients with high expectations, which really motivates me to put in 12 hour work days

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been challenges along the way ranging from temperamental clients to temperamental employees, but this is what makes life exciting. Small challenges are an everyday basis, but it’s what keeps me going.

Artistry In Motion – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Artistry In Motion is a couture ballroom design shop where we create unique ballroom dresses for competitive ballroom dancing. We specialize in making custom made dresses for client’s individual needs. Since I’ve been dancing since I was 6, I know what can set a dance couple apart from the rest of the crowd. I have a great eye and a lot of experience to rely on, so I can help couples create a new “look”. The way we construct our dresses, not only are they beautiful but they are also comfortable to dance in; and that is a challenge in itself. I am also proud that we have about 15 employees now who are very hard working and help me to create the beautiful gowns, no matter how short of a timeline we give them.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is knowing that I have a lot of couples who look beautiful, feel confident and comfortable while turning the judge’s heads and audience’s heads while dancing in the dresses I’ve designed for them.
