Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Scofield.
Joshua, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was in high school, my brother and I would walk along a path to get to a friend’s house. This path included a convenience store and a building rented out to local businesses that would change quite frequently. One day a shop owner had stopped us and asked if we would like a chair massage, my brother and I looked at each other confused as to what chair massage was and after several seconds, I had volunteered to receive one. It had only been a 10-minute chair massage but this changed my life, the experience was incredible. Ever since I had the experience of relaxation and acceptance that day, I was driven to give the same to others.
That’s when I made it my goal to become a massage therapist. Once I graduated high school, I enrolled in a massage program within the town I lived in. At the end of the program, the students were informed that they had not yet received accreditation from the state and they were not sure if they were going to get it. Frustrated with this, my brother and I chose to move down to Phoenix, where I sought out one of the best massage schools in Arizona.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once I graduated from massage school, I worked in an industry that felt closed off. There didn’t seem like there was any advancement for massage therapists to succeed; we signed non-compete agreements, which discouraged working on other clients outside of our current jobs. I felt that we didn’t have the autonomy that was needed, as therapists to develop and grow. Once I figured out that this dilemma existed, I wanted to do something about it. At this time, I was hit with some devastating news: My father was diagnosed with cancer. This, I remember, was a low point in my life. My father was one true inspiration to my success. He had encouraged me every step of the way and at the time, I felt like there was nothing that I could do to help him with his condition. Through the next couple of years, it was a painstaking roller coaster of emotions as he fought this disease. I took it upon myself to care for him and took a hiatus from massage, only practicing a couple of weekends a month.
I continued to practice massage after my dad’s cancer was treated, and eventually returned to the classroom to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in business from ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business. This period in my life was a balance. I became a father in my third year of college, so I stayed at home with my daughter during the day, went to classes in the evenings and on the weekends, I worked in massage part-time. After graduation, I spent my time between parenting and working to build a solid business plan for Simple Massage.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
We have a mission of helping perpetuate the healing process. This business was developed with both the client and therapist’s needs in mind with the goal of a more improved lifestyle. We’ve taken lessons learned from working in a variety of industries to offer what clients are really looking for: professionalism, increased well-being and respect in a place they feel comfortable. We offer in-home, in-office and event massages. What sets us apart from other businesses similar to us is our constant benchmarking from other industries. We offer fee-free Simple Memberships and convenient online booking. This allows our clients to take control of their sessions without the stress of complicated traditional methods.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have a fond memory of my brother and I using our free time as kids to do yard work for our neighbors. We had limited funds growing up, so it was up to my brother and I to try and get money to buy burritos from our local grocery store. We worked every day cleaning up leaves, pulling weeds and doing other odd jobs. We created a successful business and learned the true value of what it takes to have the autonomy to care for ourselves.
