Meet Josh Bennett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Bennett.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I studied at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and at the ASU School of Music where I got my degrees in music performance. For the past decade, I have been freelancing in and around the Phoenix valley. As a solo artist, I perform as BLACK AIR, and I frequently collaborate with many of Phoenix’s best musicians including in my electro-acoustic free-improv trio Static Announcements.

Please tell us about your art.
I consider myself a “Disciple of Sound.” I have always been interested in sound as an abstract idea, and I seek to provide for my audience a chance to consider sound without restriction. As a solo artist, I utilize improvisation, electronic manipulation, and extended technique to perform in a wide range of styles and traditions and to, hopefully, democratize sound. Sound is one of the most exciting and important parts of lives. It is with us at all times, and it is evolving and moving! I want to share that experience.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
The only advice I’m willing to give other artists is this: Listen more than you play and play as much as you can.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I participate in the Oh My Ears Festival each year here in Phoenix, and you can often find me at the Trunk Space or at the college I teach at Paradise Valley Community College. My website is blackairclari.net, and you can follow the links to my Bandcamp page. Also – check out my group Static Announcements as well!
