Meet Joseph Ballard of Constructed Matter in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Ballard.

Joseph, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated college with a Bachelor degree in Art in 2006. Started working for Gordian’s Knot as a Project Manager, building high-end custom homes. During this time I picked up trade secrets and tips by observing and helping our sub-contractors. In 2009 my wife, Tanya and I relocated to Minneapolis, MN and I worked as a Project Manager for General Contractors of MN, and a few other jobs before starting Constructed Matter in 2014. We moved to Tempe in 2016.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a breeze, but there always seems to be a project or build when it gets slow. Luckily, I can focus on my prints and artwork in between flips and remodels.

Constructed Matter – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In Minnesota, I had my GC license and primarily focused on remodels for clients. After moving to Arizona in 2016, I transitioned to primarily self-funded projects and remodels/flips. Constructed Matter is known for modern minimalist designed properties and creative artwork. We also do design and renovation consulting for clients. I am most proud of being self-sufficient. We strive to create one-off items and build as many parts of our properties from scratch and in-house.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is when work can speak for itself.

Personal success to me is being contented doing what I’m passionate about.
