Meet Jorge Castro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Castro.

Hi Jorge, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in a colonial neighborhood in Mexico City called Coyoacán; this place is well known for being an artist’s district. In my early twenties, while figuring out what I would do about my life, photography, and cinematography crossed my path, and I found what I wanted to do for the rest of my days. I stumbled through the different types of photography, but in the end, what got me into portraiture was the possibility that portraiture gave me the to tell the stories of people and places that cross my way through a single image. That was an essential part of my becoming what I am today.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been several struggles in my career; most happened when I was younger because being young and lacking experience, knowledge, and maturity made me commit many mistakes. However, I wouldn’t have learned what I needed to grow without these struggles, so I hope to continue to find some struggles along the way to keep growing.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I am a photographer and cinematographer, mainly specializing in portraiture and documentary; these two disciplines have a common ground: storytelling. I am known for having a particular style. I am confident in using hard light and contrast in my work, which also applies to my storytelling. To the point where some people consider it too much, and that is what sets me apart from others.

How do you define success?
Having the fortune to do what you love every day and call it work and seeing how others enjoy it.
