Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Gilman.
Early on, it was obvious that I didn’t fit into the frame of “normal”. I was different from my classmates and friends. Like most 90s babies, I was hooked on music, sports, movies, and video games. As a kid, I was always intrigued by the entire concept of creating something from nothing, so the influence that entertainment culture had on me at the time was the perfect launchpad for my creative endeavours.
Between building my first website at the age of 8, running an all-summer-long rummage sale in my parent’s driveway in the 5th grade, and launching my first design business while still a Freshman in high school, it only made sense that I become an entrepreneur. In fact, the idea of going in debt to earn a college degree and working a 9-to-5 job never even crossed my mind.
Despite having clear creative and entrepreneurial tendencies throughout his entire life, I was often told that doing my “own thing” was wrong and would only lead to failure. You can probably relate – maybe it was your mom, dad, girlfriend, boyfriend, or someone else close to you who told you to play it safe and take the smart route.
Breaking the mold of average isn’t easy, especially when carrying the weight of expectations that have been placed on you by the people closest to you.
I truly grew up studying the design and marketing habits of the top brands in the world, having since gone on to consult and manage digital brands for top level CEOs, professional athletes, musicians, and $100 million lifestyle brands.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely NOT been a smooth road… The big struggle when you start to build a business is the uncertainty when you’re putting in hour after hour, day after day for years and still barely making a paycheck.
Having your friends and family say, “why don’t you just get a job so you can actually pay your bills and then maybe do that other stuff on the side?” but knowing that you can’t do that..that you’ve committed to your goals for way too long that you have no choice but to press on – knowing in your heart and mind that it will all pay off.
I think this is what separates the people who are equipped and meant to be entrepreneurs versus the ones who aren’t serious or cut out. This life is definitely not meant for everyone.
The thing that most separates an entrepreneur from an employee is that guarantee of a paycheck. As long as you put in your 40 hours, or whatever it is, you can expect to see that paycheck or direct deposit at the end of the week.
When you’re an entrepreneur, especially in the beginning, you’re often working 40 hours without a guarantee of even a single penny. It’s a lot of work but if you stick to it, keep tweaking things and push forward through your failures you’ll achieve all of your goals.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a Digital Brand Architect and Creative Director. Since the age of 16, I’ve helped sports, entertainment, and lifestyle brands create raving fanbases, increase their exposure, and generate more sales. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with brands like Skinnygirl, the Phoenix Suns, the Music Entrepreneur Club, and more.
Today, I serve as a consultant to individuals or organizations that fit into the entertainment category. So this means musicians, athletes, models, producers, reality stars, entertainment companies, record labels, etc. My #1 goal in working with these individuals is to help them realize that they need to think and behave like media companies if they want to succeed in today’s marketplace.
Whether they’re feeling stuck or just getting started, I help identify where they are currently at, what their goals are, as well as any barriers that are holding them back or opportunities for improvements. Through our collaboration, clients walk away with a full, customized blueprint that has proven solutions and tactics to help them reach their goals.
Once they have this blueprint, the next step is to execute and implement the creative elements that are essential to maximize their growth potential. From website and graphic design to motion graphics and other creative execution, this is where I use my branding firepower to help them create authority and attract the raving super fans they’re looking for.
After the creative elements are in place, we work together to amplify their brand across many different platforms to place their content in front of the right people through a combination of social & digital experiences, along with influencer marketing & promotional strategies.
The lack of price tag on social media has opened up the marketing world to the masses, which is why we now live in a noisy, ridiculously competitive world. Unless you’re already established, are using paid promotions or have a buzz going, it might be hard to gain traction in building your reach and following. This is why it’s crucial for brands to have a strategy that drives the most exposure, resulting in more views, follows, likes, plays, downloads, sales, and more.
I also recently launched my rebranded creative and digital marketing company, Kaboome, which offers premium social media content creation/management and website design solutions to help entrepreneurs leverage the power of the internet while doing the least amount of work.
The goal of this is to help solve the issue of digital marketing and social media being the last thing on a business owner’s mind after spending the day doing what’s important for their business – growing it.
Starting, growing, and maintaining an online presence for a business can be a handful. Between designing a website, creating content and engaging with fans, nonetheless figuring out HOW to do those things, the challenge of making the time for it can be impossible. That’s where we come in – helping save time, money, and resources that should be used to grow their business.
How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up I was extremely high strung, to say the least.
I was always in the middle of something – whether it was coordinating the Pokemon trainer card club in my parent’s backyard.. rollerblading across the city to the skate park to spend the day (and into the night) with people twice my age (while most kids my age had to go home when the street lamps turned on).. or inside gaming my brains out!
I was an awful student when it came to anything NOT creative. I was always distracted and in a daze, thinking about the next thing I wanted to create or whatever it was I had in progress.
I grew up a major hip hop head, which has played a huge role in my creative style. Music, gaming, and media, in general, has always had a big place in my life and is part of the reason I am so interested in collaborating with entertainment personalities and brands.
