Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Elmore.
Hi Jordan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2017, I made the bold move from a small town in California to Phoenix, which presented its own set of challenges. However, the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League emerged as a vital support system during this transition. Stepping onto the field with the “PGFFL” logo on my chest in 2018 marked the beginning of an incredible journey where I found my forever family and home. After taking a break to pursue my All-Star cheerleading career, I returned to the league and was welcomed back with abundant love. The PGFFL community stood by me during my final two years of All-Star Cheer with Top Gun Arizona, culminating in the achievement of my dream of becoming a World Champion in 2023. This triumph came amidst the completion of my first Master’s degree in Autism Studies and commencing my second Master’s degree program in Special Education. Despite facing numerous challenges and moments of doubt, the league motivated me to persevere in both my education and cheerleading, ultimately propelling me towards my aspirations. Looking ahead, I am on track to graduate with my second Master’s degree in the fall and have become an active member of the Greater Phoenix LGBTQIA+ community. I proudly take on the role of the Director of Recruitment and Retention for the PGFFL, and have participated as a Pro Dancer for the Dancing for One N Ten Event for two years. Additionally, I serve on the Education and Outreach Committee as well as the Fund Development Committee for Phoenix Pride. These achievements stand as a testament to the indispensable support and inspiration I received from the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League and the remarkable tribe I found within it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road is ever a smooth road. I feel like the journey is full of potholes, sharp turns, dips, and whatever else you can think of on an open road. When it comes to finding yourself and figuring out your purpose, the trials that come with that were not the most fun BUT they built up a lot of the strength and resilience that has shown itself in my day to day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an Elementary Special Education Teacher who is dedicated to pushing for inclusion and understanding of our students with disabilities and why it is so crucial they get the resources they need to be successful. Throughout my career, I have pursued innovative approaches to empower my students and help them achieve their full potential. Whether it involves mastering new skills or cultivating a positive mindset, I am committed to their growth.
Transitioning to Special Education from my role as an ABA therapist, I have found my true calling in guiding my students toward meaningful accomplishments. My active involvement in the LGBTQIA+ community, including serving in leadership roles and supporting youth organizations, has enriched my journey. Being recognized in the Grand Canyon University 30 under 30 list in 2023 was a humbling yet affirming experience, reinforcing the impact of my work in the field.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My vibrant and very much “unique” personality contributes to my success. It has helped me fall in love with being on stage with public speaking, performing for dance or cheer, or even hosting events for the PGFFL. I tend to want to be the light in the room and make sure people feel warm and welcomed but also practice the idea that if you give good out in the world, you receive good back.
