Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Yazzie.
Jonathan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started by shooting photos with film. Then I had took a break for a couple of years and purchased a mirrorless camera. I shot as many photos as possible to create somewhat the vibe I have now with my photos. What has helped me through this path is definitely consistency. I reached out to many people to take their photos, many no’s but the more I asked the more comfortable I was with asking and it became more yes’s. I’m originally from New Mexico and moved here to Arizona about two years ago. I shoot photos throughout the Phoenix area.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road? No definitely not. Some of struggles with me have been networking and working along with people. I was not comfortable with asking someone to take their photo but as I progressed and stayed consistent, asking someone to take their photo is something I’m comfortable and confident in doing. Another struggle is making everything mobile, such as editing cause I’m always on the go, I’m definitely not a homebody so I’ve adjusted to make everything mobile. With photography there are many struggles but with anything in life, struggles shouldn’t discourage you about what you’re wanting to accomplish but only want to push you further to succeed.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about IMMORTAL Photography – what should we know?
My business is called IMMORTAL Photography. I try to specialize in many areas of photography and being versatile. I do abstract, portraits, street, product and other forms of photography. So if a client is needing something specific, I will do my best to ensure they get the vision they are going for with their photos. The feedback I’ve gotten about my photos has been “edgy, colorful and vibrant.” I’m most proud of being Native American and showing other native Americans who want to be in this field of work that is possible to branch off and be different yet hold those traditional values with your work. What sets me apart? Well my response to that would be looking at my photos, I don’t have much to stay when it comes to that question because I feel like the photos I take should speak and answer to the question.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always outside and I grew up in a small town in New Mexico. I was curious and a risk-taker, not a daredevil but I like to push things to the limit. I was and still am huge into Star Wars and Hot Wheels. Wrestling was huge in the household too.
