Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan + Jenna Kimble.
Hi Jonathan and Jenna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We got married in 2016, and at that time, I didn’t know how handy Jonathan really was. He works in the construction industry as a project manager, and we moved around at the beginning of our marriage. We moved to Arizona in 2018 and bought our first home! We didn’t start our home and DIY account until July 2020, after we had done a few projects in our home. We did everything ourselves to save money—painting, flooring, decor, etc. I have a background in social media, writing, and blogging, so I started sharing our projects and home. We are usually always working on a new project, and now we collaborate with companies and brands who sponsor many of our projects. I do most of the social media and posting, and Jonathan brings my vision to life! We’ve joined a great community of home decor and do-it-yourself friends.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No project ever goes perfectly! Being on social media, I knew it was going to be a struggle to grow and find ways to get paid. I quickly learned that you don’t need to have hundreds of thousands of followers to work with companies and make money. This is mainly my side hobby and passion, but I’m lucky that Jonathan is so supportive and lets me take so many Instagram photos. One specific struggle I remember was doing projects in the summer! We quickly learned that we need to take summers off to avoid the heat. Our first summer here, Jonathan built me a TV console table in 102-degree weather. We won’t ever do that again!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a DIY couple, or “do-it-yourself.” That means instead of hiring someone to renovate our home. We design and carry out the project ourselves. We share and document our home renovations on Instagram, TikTok, our blog, Facebook, and more. We specialize in anything from woodworking to painting, and we’re known for our fun transformations. We even have a few viral videos on TikTok showing off our TV frame and epoxy garage floors.
I’m most proud of our ability to work together, and Jonathan is most proud of the way I can reach out and get sponsorships, jobs, and paid opportunities. I think what sets us apart from others is that we’re a husband-and-wife team, raising a baby in our first home, sharing REAL and raw moments. We aren’t as polished as HGTV and we aren’t amateurs—we’re somewhere right in between. We are a real family, sharing our projects, passions, and favorite products with our friends and followers.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to be authentic and real. When I first jumped into the social media world, I saw a lot of filters, “like groups,” and fake followers. It’s a very competitive space, so I learned to be honest and real, whether that’s sharing something that went wrong with a project or writing a caption that resonates with people instead of coming across as fake. There’s a lot of space for advertisements in social media, and people can tell when an influencer is just trying to sell something. I’ve also learned not to fixate on trends, likes, or “big box style,” which is that same general style you see in most Target stores nationwide. It’s important to find your own authentic self and not worry about how many likes your photo gets. Instagram and social media is not real life! That’s so important to remember.
