Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnyee Beasley.
Johnyee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey has been a bit of a winding path. In 1994, I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree from Grand Canyon University, majoring in Biology and a double minor in Chemistry & Humanities. From there, I went to Graduate School in the San Francisco Bay area. I earned my Doctorate Degree in Chiropractic, Cum Laude, in 1998. It was a long journey, with a lot of studying and a lot of sacrifice, but I earned that those degrees in under ten years, and am proud to say I put myself through each and every year of that education.
After graduation, I returned home to Arizona and practiced Chiropractic in Scottsdale for a couple years. I enjoyed taking care of my patients, and loved watching their health improve, but something was missing for me.
It was at dinner with friends when I had an “ah-ha” moment. A friend of a friend was explaining how she had just started Aesthetic School and was so excited. I found myself feeling a bit green with envy. Inside my mind, I was having a silent conversation…’I’m a Doctor and went to school forever to earn that, and somehow I’m feeling jealous of someone going to school to learn how to do skin care? What does this mean?”
I’ve always said, education sets you free and opens doors for a prosperous and happy future. I also believe we have to have enough courage and conviction to follow our dreams and passions, wherever they may lead. It was with these ideas in mind that I decided to go back to school, yet again. My friends and family truly thought I was nuts. I enrolled in the top Aesthetic School in Phoenix, and in early 2001 I graduated top in my class with my Aesthetic Certificate. It didn’t take me long to build up a large and prestigious clientele, and I loved everything about it!
It was in early 2005 when I first heard about eyelash extensions, and decided to add it to my repertoire. I researched, and decided to go with the best, Xtreme Lashes. I received my certification from Xtreme Lashes in 2005, and was quickly recruited by the President of the company to become a National Educator for them. I spent many years travelling all over the U.S. and Canada teaching and certifying others in the fine art of eyelash extensions, it was so much fun. I have a serious tendency to be a perfectionist, maybe even a little OCD, but that trait is perfect for eyelash extensions, as it really requires a serious attention to the tiniest details. Before I knew it, eyelash extensions took over my skincare business, and I was thrilled. When you do what you love every day, you truly become an expert at it, and that is a double blessing.
My business continued to grow, and in 2007, I decided to open a day spa. Vita Bella fine day spa opened and was a huge success. For eight years Vita Bella kept me super busy, as my eyelash extension business and reputation continued to grow. It kept me so busy that a decision was made to downsize, allowing me to focus on my true love, eyelash extensions. I decided to open a private studio, and in 2015, I made it happen. My clients had nicknamed me “the lash diva” through the years, so it became the perfect name for my studio.
Eyelash Extensions have taken me all over the U.S. and Canada, that has been such a wonderful experience, but the most exciting experience happened in the fall of 2016. This is when I attended The League of Lash masters in Prague, Czech Republic! All I can say is, WOW! The best of the best in eyelash extensions, from all over the world were there. It was amazing on every level.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think my winding journey would lead me here, but holy moly, I’m so very happy and grateful to be here. Life is so good.
Has it been a smooth road?
My road hasn’t always been smooth, but seriously, who’s has been? I don’t think you’ve really lived unless you’ve hit some speed bumps along the way. I suppose I look at my speed bumps as lessons, and they have made me who I am today. I’m a pretty strong willed and independent woman, I thank those bumps along the way for making me this way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Lash Diva story. Tell us more about the business.
Hands down, my business centers around eyelash extensions…that’s really all I do. I take pride in being one of the best at my craft, and at the end of the day I go home happy knowing I made my clients happy. I continue to perfect my craft all the time, there is always some new innovation in the business, and it’s important to me to stay on top of that. I continue my education all the time, and this really sets me apart from a lot of others.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
When I first started doing eyelash extensions, I was only the second person in our entire state to be certified to do it. That was way back in 2005, and I have been witness to huge growth in my industry. In the beginning, few people even knew what I was talking about when I said I did eyelash extensions. Now, almost every woman knows what they are. I only see it becoming better and bigger in the next decade.
