Today we’d like to introduce you to John Hinton.
John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion is to be in full-time ministry as a pastor. I grew up in Houston TX and went to Oklahoma City, OK for seminary. During that time I worked at Discount Tire. I moved to Scottsdale in 2013 primarily to help start a church in north Scottsdale and I also transferred with discount tire to a store in Scottsdale. I got tired of working for Discount tire so I quit and worked a few jobs until I got into the pool industry. I started Desert Pool Tech January 2016. I started this in the beginning as a way to fund my career as a music pastor. I am still unpaid at the church I helped start so my goal is to make Desert Pool Tech as automated as possible so I can keep working in ministry hopefully being able to move into a lead pastor position.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no. Sometimes I look back and wander how I did it because it seemed so easy. Other times I look back and think Why did I do it. For the first two years I was in business I had to work a nightshift at a couple different security companies to pay the bills. That was a blast. I would get off my shift at 6 am, drive to Scottsdale to attend a Scottsdale chamber of commerce networking event for two hours and then do my route until noon or 1 then go to sleep until five or six when I had to be at work. I remember being at the networking meetings hoping no one would find out that I was a fraud.
Tell us more about the business.
I like to think we are known for our customer service and professionalism. We focus on quality over quantity in an industry that focuses on quantity over quality. Because of that our prices are higher than your average pool guy but we also provide a better experience than your average one-poler pool guy. We specialize in route and automation.
What sets me apart from others is that I incorporate principles that have made me effective in ministry into the way I treat my customers. I like to think of them as my flock and my employees are my staff guys helping me serve them. I am most proud of the origination of my company. My inspiration verse is Exodus 15:22-27
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Everything in the pool industry is going into automation. being able to control your pool from your smartphone.
