Meet John Hill of Space Massage Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Hill.

John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been interested in using my body for physical activities, whether Rock Climbing, Salsa dancing or running. These passions came together through learning the Massage Therapy craft in Las Vegas, NV at the Nevada School of Massage Therapy in 2001. After completing the intense full-time program, I moved back to Pittsburgh, PA and was hired at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort about 60 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. Working there as a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) for 2 years was a great learning experience that eventually led me to move to Phoenix, AZ in 2005.

I’ve assisted in the opening and worked as an LMT at many of the premier resorts in the Valley of the Sun including Sanctuary on Camelback, the VH Spa at the Hotel Valley Ho (Lead Therapist), Moss Wellness Spa (owner, designer, COO), the Golden Door Spa, and Joya Spa at the Omni Montelucia. These experiences allowed me to take on the challenge of single-handedly creating, branding and marketing Space Massage Studio, the highest rated massage business in the Phoenix Metro area.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an entrepreneur has always been a part of me, and while is never an easy road, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Working for someone or a large company rarely gives you the opportunity to stand out or take initiatives in real time that clients will value for a lifetime.

The biggest challenge for growing Space Massage Studio early on was not having enough capital to implement a true marketing strategy. I would consistently create deals and offers to encourage friends and friends of friends to schedule an appointment to experience how a massage can improve their life. Undercutting your value is heartbreaking, but a necessity sometimes.

Space Massage Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Space Massage Studio focuses on the client. We take the time to listen and hear their concerns in order to work with them in a manner that allows them to fully relax. Space is By Appointment Only and in doing so, we get to know our clients over time. We don’t offer huge discounts or specials to get someone in or to keep them coming back.

I am most proud of the team that I’ve assembled over the past 2 years. These 3 individuals (Stacey, Kayt, and Ines) are masters of their craft and it shows.

I believe that our intention sets us apart from the competition. Our intention is to give the client the best massage they’ve ever had, each and every time that they visit Space Massage Studio.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Many years ago, I was asked this same question and replied, “I believe that true success is how well you sleep at night when looking back on your day, tasks, or goals.” I still believe in this statement and try to move the business forward each day, helping others to feel better about their bodies and providing a great environment for the individuals that work at Space.
