Meet Joey Jamesley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Jamesley.

Joey Jamesley

Hi Joey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The last year has been a wild one! Shoot, the last four years have! In October 2023, I opened my Interior Styling business, Pine & Palm, and in November 2023, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. A whopping 6 weeks later. So, you could say a giant wall got thrown up in front of me right when things were starting to take off!

I was booking clients and things were really starting to move, so getting a cancer diagnosis wasn’t really in the plan.

Seven months later, a double mastectomy, DIEP flap reconstruction (that’s where they use your own tissue to reconstruct breasts, (and it’s a massive surgery) and treatments that consist of medication to block new cancer from growing, and a monthly injection of a pellet to block my hormones, I’m finally getting back(ish) to myself and back to my business! Cancer is a wild rollercoaster with ups and downs; some days, you feel good, and others, you feel like crap. Emotions are all over the place, you have fear for the unknown, and you’re learning to adapt and love this new “normal” that is your life. It was a setback that I definitely wasn’t expecting, but in a weird way helped me. (I’ll touch on that in a min)

I love what I do! Creating spaces for people’s homes and businesses that truly reflect them and deliver a place of peace and solitude has become even more important to me after living at home for so many months (and needing those months to be stress-free!) Our home or work should be our sanctuary and a space that we love to be in. Giving that gift to people is something that motivates me every day within my business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh Lordy, has it been hard! Like I said, getting cancer only a few weeks after opening my doors was not in the plan! I had to stop marketing and taking on clients because I didn’t know what treatment or recovery was going to look like or when my surgery was going to be. I didn’t know if I was going to need chemo or radiation, how my body would react to treatments, or if I’d feel good enough to work at all.

That was a really scary place to be in. To not have any income coming in, but bills (including medical) coming in regardless. I had no idea what the future was going to look like. For an OCD-organizing mom who’s a planner, I really didn’t like that! Talk about an uncomfortable position!

But I quickly learned that during times of hardship, you can truly learn who you are and what you’re made of. This diagnosis was also a blessing in disguise, as I mentioned above. I’m a very go-go-go person, trying to do all the things, all the time, and I don’t slow down. But getting cancer forced me to slow down, to take a step back, and to really assess my life, my business, and my work-life balance. It made me really focus on what I wanted to do, what was important to me, and where I wanted my business to go.

In my time of recovery, I was able to really hone in on what my business looks like, and what truly makes me happy. Now I have a very streamlined business plan, clear goals, and I can see where I’m going. Taking out the overwhelm has been a huge relief, and I’m so much happier now! Do I still have hard days? Sure. Days I feel like sh*t, yep. But because of this forced break, it’s ok, and I can handle them much more easily! I highly recommend to anyone who feels overwhelmed in their life to take a step back and really look at all the pieces. See where you can eliminate, and where you want to put your focus, and what truly makes you happy. Life is too short; as corny as that sounds, it’s true! You’re not guaranteed tomorrow, so make today count! You’ll thank me in the end!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My job is my happy place! I don’t even like to call it a “job.” What I do is I create amazing spaces for people in their homes or businesses. From simple redecorating, choosing paint, personal shopping for 1-2 pieces, to full gut and re-design! My aesthetic is what I call Modern-Eclectic. I love to mix old and new textures and colors and really create a space that has depth and character and is unique to the individual.

What sets me apart from other Interior Stylists and Designers is my background. It’s not the traditional route of others in my field. I worked over 17 years as a Hairstylist and Makeup Artist for Bobbi Brown, where I garnered my eye for concept and design through creating beautiful hair and makeup creations. I worked on many sets for photoshoots and TV/film, where I learned scale, dimension, color theory, etc. This helps me to see the “big picture” and think steps ahead when creating a space.

Then, I worked as a Hypnotherapist and Stress & Trauma Specialist, where I learned so much about people and the psychology behind why we do what we do. This helps me to anticipate what my clients need, how to approach things, and how to help them navigate the stress that can come with a styling or remodel.

These skills combined really help me to understand my clients, to have great communication, and to meet them where they’re at which lends to a beautiful working relationship.

I offer In-Person styling or design, Virtual Styling, Personal Shopping, Virtual Staging, Color Consultations, and Custom Artwork. I work with individuals and their homes, commercial businesses, AirBnb/VRBO owners, builders, realtors, to name a few.

I put my heart and soul into every project I’m on, and I’m not happy with “just ok.” I want it to be perfect for whoever I’m styling or designing for. (the OCD in me lol) I love the hunt for that perfect piece, and every time I’m shopping or putting a mood board together, I can’t believe it’s my job! I honestly nerd out over it! I have an unhealthy relationship with HGTV and love every second of a project. I’m a very budget-conscious stylist, and I don’t believe you need to spend a ton of money to have an amazing space that looks incredible. Like I said, I love the hunt for the perfect piece and at the right price. I’m also environmentally friendly and will repurpose or buy antique or thrifted items when I can. I feel like that not only is helping the planet, but it also puts way more character into a space, rather than everything looking the same or too “new”, or the same stuff that your neighbor has in their house too. I want the space to really feel like and be a reflection of you!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Oh gosh, to keep it in line with my work, I LOVED building and creating with my dad. He’s the type of guy who could build anything! He taught me from a very young age how to use tools, what to look for in furniture and how it’s built, how to properly paint a room (I was constantly changing my room!), and to be able to visualize a project from start to finish.

I also loved going to my mom’s home decor store! It was in an old historical town in Oregon where I grew up. (I’m talking small, y’all; the Oregon Trail went through there!) I loved the old buildings and the architecture. I always thought it was so neat how walking into a space could make you feel a certain way, and I was drawn to learn how to create that for others.
