Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Buckaloo.
Hi Jocelyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At 18, I packed my bags and left Arizona for Washington, landing a job in a cozy bakery. One fateful day, a cake decorator invited me to try my hand at decorating. I was hooked. The swirl of frosting, the delicate piping—it felt like art. I sharpened my skills and joined the decorating team, spending years transforming cakes into edible masterpieces. But life threw a curveball: a neck and shoulder injury required surgery, forcing me to return to Arizona and move in with family. My bakery days faded as I settled into a desk job, got married, and welcomed a baby girl. Cake decorating became a hobby, reserved for friends and family.
Then, a friend’s encouragement changed everything. “You’re too talented not to start a business,” she said. The idea was thrilling but terrifying. I dove in, researching Arizona’s regulations, perfecting recipes, and tackling pricing and packaging. I offered free cakes on Facebook to build a clientele, and soon, orders started trickling in.
Two months in, my world crumbled. My marriage ended, leaving me a single mom in a cramped apartment. My tech job barely covered the bills, and stress became a constant companion. Yet, I kept decorating, pouring my heart into every cake through tears and sleepless nights. My tiny kitchen overflowed with supplies; I even squeezed a second fridge into the laundry room. On the toughest days, seeing customers’ faces light up as they picked up their cakes—for birthdays, weddings, or milestones—reminded me why I started. Those cakes weren’t just desserts; they were moments of joy, and they helped me afford Christmas gifts for my daughter.
Balancing a 9-5 tech job with late-night and weekend baking was grueling, but decorating never felt like work. I’d lie awake, dreaming up new designs, envisioning ways to grow my business. Two years later, I’ve carved out more space—both in my home and my life—for this passion. My business is thriving, a testament to resilience and creativity. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, turning flour and frosting into a future for me and my daughter.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Initially, the toughest challenges were pricing and recipe development. I meticulously calculated costs, down to the penny for a teaspoon of salt. Valuing my time was trickier—early on, I’d charge for two hours of decorating, only to spend double that perfecting each cake. Recipe development brought its own hurdles, especially determining batch sizes. Too often, I’d whip up a batch of batter, only to fall short and have to start over, learning through trial and error to get the quantities just right for each order.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in artful cakes, I pour my passion for creativity into every design, blending skills from painting, drawing, and sculpting to craft edible art. One of my favorite techniques is the intricate Lambeth vintage borders, especially on heart-shaped cakes. I thrive when clients come to me with just a color palette or a personal story, trusting me to dream up a unique design. These open-ended requests spark my imagination, letting me transform their vision into a stunning, one-of-a-kind cake that tells their story in every detail.
How do you think about happiness?
I find joy getting lost in the zone, whether I’m crafting an intricate artificial cake, drawing, or sweating it out in a hot yoga class. It’s that magical moment when my mind quiets, and I’m fully immersed, letting creativity or movement flow effortlessly. Those are the times I feel truly alive and happiest.
