Meet Jingyu (Sabrina) Yuan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jingyu (Sabrina) Yuan.

Jingyu, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being a “fake model” and stylist is because people around me were saying I could look good in photos and I started to take more photos with my outfits more often than usual. And then I started posting those outfits photos on Instagram and Chinese social media called “Nothing” – a style blogger app.

Posting those pictures is a way of expressing myself to others which is what I want to do, even though my style is always changing through time. I would say my style is mainly edgy, cool girl vibe, but sometimes I would be the girly one. As for my “fake model” title, it’s because I think everyone could be a model as long as you have the confidence and a good sense of being photographed.

The model industry should be inclusive since “average size girl” like me cannot be part of the high fashion. I was part of the ASU fashion show and will be continually working with them because they are inclusive when it comes to choosing models. I was also one of the models in Arizona Fashion Week because they have diverse sizes on the runway. Being a “fake model in the middle” is not a bad thing at all.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Actually, not smooth. The struggle would be too little time and too much work. As a college student, I don’t have that much free time to dress up and take the pictures and edit them.

Also, it’s hard to find a photographer who can take your pictures all the time, so my friends around me are my “personal photographers.” As for modeling, I feel like I put so much in finding modeling opportunities, but I’m just not the one they are looking for.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a style blogger in a Chinese app called “nothing,” and I’m always the “personal stylist” when my friends need to put an outfit together. I’m also a freelance model who’s really proud of who I am and satisfied with my body.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I’m always passionate about fashion when I was little, I would like to dress up for no reason. My parents gave me so many ideas on style which is “less is more.”

My mom is always the one looking so good even in her t-shirt and jeans, and my dad is always the one buying the outfit for us. Also, I love those fashion documentaries that I would watch them over and over again, and fashion magazines are so addictive too.
