Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Ederer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Twisted Vintage Story… before I was Twisted Vintage, I enjoyed working on garage sale treasures. It was a hobby really–a challenge to find a piece of furniture on its last leg (literally AND figuratively) and give it new life. In 2012, we merged our passions for all things rustic and refinished, and along with my husband started this business based on producing quality workmanship while having fun in the process.
We put a lot of love into each piece we work on for our clients. Whether it’s a custom order, custom build, an antique find or an outdated item that could use a new look, we can’t wait to transform that special something that will become the conversation piece of your home. We have been beyond blessed the opportunity this small business has given!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle with our business has been at time management. When we first started, my husband was a Wood-shop teacher at a local high school. I was a full-time mom at home with four kids. Managing the kids, all their sport and school was a bit challenging. Then, in 2016, my husband interviewed for the Phoenix fire department and was hired. That year, him going through the academy, I tried to do the business on my own. It went ok but always better when he helps out. Then, he went through medic school but now, we finally have him back. I finally feel like our time management is under control it has gotten much better the past couple years. Next struggle would be social media. There’s so much to it- posting, followers, time of posting, etc. But I have fun with it! I love all of our followers!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Twisted Vintage Az story. Tell us more about it.
What we do:
-We can refinish a piece of existing furniture you already own.
-We can custom build a piece of furniture from scratch.
-We offer in-stock items that are ready for purchase.
-We take requests to be on the lookout for particular items during our regular antique and “treasure” hunts.
One of my favorite items we create is taking a client door (laundry, bathroom, pantry) and change it into a glass door these have been very popular! I think these have made us stand out for sure. What sets us apart from other furniture refinishers is that I am always up for a challenge! Of course, I have a certain style but sometimes clients want me to change it up and I’m so glad they do! I really look at each of my furniture creations as a piece of art.
We always love to ask about the support network – have there been people, perhaps mentors or advisors, who have played a big role in your success?
I have a few for sure!
1st
Larry and Cathi Pierce, I feel are the parents of the business they helped us start and got it running- they refinish custom pieces and create some we post for sale. Cathi has been my behind the scene partner many times especially on a local news show (Arizona Midday) for my DIY segments, whenever we need help they are there! Always supportive and chimes in new ideas.
2nd
My brother Tim Ham is a local artist in Phoenix. Watching him build his business Solth has been so encouraging! He has given me good direction. With my social media and helping me with my time management. Very supportive! I hope I can be like him when I grow up!
3rd”
My sister in law Alicia Brown she has also been my behind the scenes Helper for the Arizona Midday DIY segments. She has been my muscles carrying everything to the show couldn’t have done them without her.
4th
To my parents, they were huge cheerleaders and my mother in law for always helping with my kiddos – watching them or driving to three different practice in one night so I can complete my job.
5th
Of course, all the clients that have believed in me! Some of them giving me the furniture that has been in their family for generation to refinish! Even the followers that have never purchased anything but so supportive and encouraging on social media!
