Meet Jess Hartman of Hartman Haus in North Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Hartman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a wife, a mother, a follower of Jesus and a self-proclaimed decorating aficionado! Truth be told, I began my decorating career at the age of seven. My parents and I had just moved into a four-bedroom home – which meant I had three rooms to bounce back and forth from…and I did! Every few months I would grow tired of my same bedroom setup and I’d move all of my furniture to the opposite side of the house, I’d beg my Dad to repaint and would occasionally ask my Mom for new bedding to match. This went on for years – what I thought was just an obsessive-compulsive need to rearrange my room, was really my spiritual gift.

I finally started an Instagram page in February of 2018 – my passion project if you will. It started slow – really just posting photos of our cozy Newport Beach apartment, a “like” here a couple more there…then one day the #stellarspaces crew told me I was their feature for the week – and suddenly things took off! Companies were asking me to collaborate, strangers were asking me to decorate their homes – my little hobby was almost turning into a full-time job.

Fast forward to January 2019 and Hartman Haus LLC was created. I’m currently working with 12 incredible clients – helping them turn their own design dreams into a reality.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Depends what you consider to be “smooth.” I think we all face adversity, especially when you’re chasing a dream. I can look back now and realize that I had to go through certain situations or difficulties to get where I’m at right now – God was moving and continues to move in my life and throughout the creation of this business. Occasionally something won’t pan out the way I wanted it to and I’ll be bummed for a day or so, then I have to snap myself out of it and say “God’s got different plans girlfriend!” and His plans are always better than my own.

Hartman Haus – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m an Interior Decorator, I guess you can say I specialize in finding inventive or unique ways to style a home. I’m probably best known for my “color blocking” or utilizing “real life items” as decor, i.e., the surfboard we hung in our dining room and the vintage ladder we mounted on our wall. I’m most proud of being able to offer what I like to call “Mobile Style Coaching” where I essentially help you restyle your home without ever having to physically step foot into the space. This is currently my most popular service, as not all of my clients are here in Arizona. I’d say what sets me apart from other decorators is my creativity – I really try to think outside the box when it comes to designing a space, the end result is so much cooler that way!

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Whatever God has in store I guess… I mean I’d love it if we could completely turn this into a family business. My husband is currently a General Manager of restaurant at the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess but I wouldn’t be opposed to him getting his General Contracting License – we could be the Chip & Joanna Gaines of Arizona!
