Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Hyland.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Arizona almost nine years ago from New York- my now husband, boyfriend at the time, got offered a job out here. I made the leap of faith to move with zero friends or family in AZ and trust my heart. It’s been a whirlwind of different jobs, living situations and figuring myself out in this new place in my life.
When I originally moved to Arizona, I had hoped it would be a temporary thing, eventually bringing me back home to NY. Even though it took four years, I finally found my place and realized I absolutely love Arizona. I found confidence in myself and being able to survive without having my friends/family as a crutch
January 29th, 2016, my daughter, Harlee Lynn Hyland was born. This was the happiest and most terrifying day of my life. I was no longer just me, I was now a mom! I now have this little being that looks up to me and depends on me for EVERYTHING! My husband was working full time to provide for us, so I was a stay at home mom for about a year.
That entire year, I focused every single ounce of energy on being a mom- and in that time- forgot about myself. My whole identity was confused, and I struggled to find myself again. Fast forward to today, I’m a full time working mom. By day, I’m a professional Business Manager of an apartment community, by night, I’m a sweat pants wearing, wine drinking, hot mess of a mom.
About six months ago I started my side business, Harlee Lynn Lane. The name was obviously inspired by my daughter- who also inspired me to follow my passions & dreams of one day owning my own business. Growing up, my father was an entreprenuer, owning everything from sub shops, to dry cleaning shops, to now, his extremely successful BBQ restaurant and catering company. It’s definitely in my blood to want my own business.
Harlee Lynn Lane is my outlet for my creative side. I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing in 2008 and have been itching to use what I learned. I’m just getting started and love meeting and learning from local small businesses. For now, I’ve been creating car decals and vinyl decals for local craft shows, and local businesses, such as Enroute Coffee & Tea and Love You a Latte Shop. For now, this is a part-time passion, but I’d love for it to become my career.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m new to owning my own business, so the entire concept has been a struggle. Coming up with a business name, marketing strategy, Instagram account, design concept, what I actually want to sell, what my target audience is..the list goes on. I love the struggles because that’s what makes you learn. I’ve learned to start small- get your name out there, make local friends, meet local businesses- the best way to expand your business is word of mouth.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Right now, I’m specializing in car decals and permanent vinyl decals. My car decals can be customized for each specific buyer- color, size, concept. I’ve had people message me with a general idea, and I create the decal for them specifically.
I have a range of designs, but the favorites tend to be the light-hearted, funny & witty ones. I’ve also partnered with some local businesses to do decals for their products and marketing materials.
What I’m most proud of is my confidence to put myself out there with local businesses.
It’s scary to reach out to someone for the fear of rejection, but I’ve learned, worst case scenario, even if they aren’t interested, at least you’ve put yourself out there and made a local connection.
What sets Harlee Lynn Lane apart from others, is my business is ran by me and only me. I design, create, market and sell all my items. What you see is what you get!
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I really hope that small businesses take off in the next 5-10 years. I love to see our community supporting and encouraging all local self-owned businesses, whether big or small.
Small businesses have a way of providing personal and seamless customer service. Yes, there are companies like Amazon and Etsy, however, there’s something endearing about genuine relationships with small business owners.
