Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Colon.
Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Chef Noon Culinary Services was born out of a Chef’s love for cooking and a Mom’s love of meal prepping! We had a shared interest in enjoying good, flavorful food that is also a great balance of healthy.
Chef Noon (whose real name is Rafael Colon), Noon is a family nickname, enjoyed cooking and after serving in the Army and a year long tour in Iraq, decided to enroll in culinary school. He attended the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu. As for me, I was beginning to learn about nutrition and food through my own personal interests. As I did not know how to cook and going through week after week of a busy schedule with me working full-time and Noon in school full-time, and raising our daughter, our diet was suffering. We were eating whatever was the easiest and quickest, and before long we started learning how to meal prep. I loved the process but quickly despised giving up my weekends to meal plan, find recipes, get groceries and then cook only 1 or 2 things because I would run out of time. At the time, Noon had a busy schedule and couldn’t meal prep for us as often. We got the idea of the service because we were doing it for ourselves and saw a growing need. Before long, we started offering meal prep services to Valley families once he graduated from Culinary School. From there, we added more professional Chefs so we can serve even more families. Our Chef team also enjoys flexibility in schedules and enjoys cooking for our families.
Being in the culinary business there are so many needs around food. So we also started offering dinner parties and boutique catering for more intimate events and occasions.
Has it been a smooth road?
About two years into our business we were growing, had a strong team and things were great. Unfortunately, Chef Noon started suffering from symptoms of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) common among many Veterans. This made it difficult for him to even drive or leave the house many days. He had to slow down a lot and take a back seat role in the next phase of our business. Over the course of the next year, this was one of our lives greatest challenges going through so much personally as well as keeping up with the demands of a busy, thriving and growing business. Going through those days made me realize how strong he is, how strong our family is and how strong I am. Your business is a living, growing part of you and I am thankful we have the team we have and how much we have learned and continue to learn in this situation. Any time someone starts a business it is scary and exciting. Will it work out? Will I fall flat on my face? We were still very new in this industry and learning so much. This journey is difficult all on its own. Having Noon’s life experience change and our roles and our lives uprooted as a result was challenging and it’s not easy. On a personal note, I do urge anyone suffering from or knows someone suffering from PTSD (no matter the cause), I offer encouragement to reach out to talk about your experience. It’s likely the last thing you would like to do but it’s the one thing you need to do. People are kind and having someone acknowledge your journey can make all the difference.
