Meet Jennifer Johnson of Jeislay in Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Johnson.

Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been in love with beauty since I was a little girl. Anything that involves hair, makeup, and fashion I was all in. I knew I truly loved makeup and all the different looks you can up with was in 2016. I started trying new looks, new brands and I started to do makeup on friends and family. I’ve worked for Sephora and I absolutely loved it! I’ve worked for a skincare line and that was amazing. I’m currently working for Ulta and I love everything about it. All the knowledge that I gain everytime I work is amazing. I started focusing on posting on Instagram in 2019. Anything from makeup on myself, mini-tutorials, and client work is what you will find on my page. Even though I have such a small following, I love the support I get from everyone. My dream is to be able to freelance and really grow with the makeup community. Never give up on your dreams. If you really love what you do, you’ll succeed no matter what.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is anything really smooth nowadays? Lol I love a challenge. Somedays I’ll cry and get really discouraged, other days I’ll put my crown on and show my best work. The challenges for me were posting a look that I love and not getting as many views or likes. I stopped looking at numbers and just kept posting and doing my thang. People will notice soon enough 🤗

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jeislay story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is Jeislay or makeup with Jei. It’s all about makeup. I love to inspire women of color that you can wear pink, blue, red, or green shadow! Be you be who you love to be. Growing up in Arizona, it was a little hard being a woman of color. Not too many people understood that my hair can change overnight, that my makeup can be spontaneous and that’s okay. That’s who I am. I specialize in creating bold full coverage glam and natural glam looks. I’m most proud of where I’ve come from and where I see myself going in the near future.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Wow! That’s a good question. Good luck has played a role by blocking out people who never supported me or tried to use my talents for their own gains. Bad luck, well that’s always gonna happen. You gotta take them as they come, learn from them and keep it pushing.
