Meet Jeffrey Quatrone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Quatrone.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeffrey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After seeing how hard my parents worked in their business I wanted a life with more leisure time. I was always fascinated with printing and enjoyed a long career as a journeyman pressman with the Arizona Republic. After 25 years of news media experienced a drastic change in the way news was delivered. I realized that my life’s passion was not going to support me until retirement. I had to find something else to take me to retirement.

I was always involved with accounting, starting with my parent’s business working in the office. I was treasurer of many clubs growing up. While at the newspaper I was elected Secretary/Treasurer a post I still hold today, even during retirement from the industry. During my time at the newspaper, I often did taxes for co-workers. My first client, a co-worker hadn’t filed taxes for several years. I was able to get a refund of several thousand dollars. He was joyous and grateful for the help I provided. Then another co-worker approached me about a tax problem. He owed over $80,000 and had many unfiled tax returns. This taxpayer was my first true client. I filed all the back taxes and successfully arranged an Offer In Compromise with the IRS, where the $80,000 he owed was reduced to $24,000 payable in 24 equal payments.

He also was grateful for the help I gave him. From there my tag line, “Experience my personal approach to limiting your tax burden” was born. This was in 2011, I was still working at The Arizona Republic and met clients at my home.

As the business grew I moved my office out of my home to a shared office and two years ago moved into my current location on Cactus Road in Phoenix.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In any service business, reputation and word of mouth take time to build. I had a distinct advantage; my union contract at The Arizona Republic. The contract stipulated that I had to work at least one day every 90 to maintain my position on the hiring board. This allowed me to take time off during tax season to concentrate on the business, during the off-season I worked at the newspaper to help pay the bills. I officially retired from the newspaper in 2018, seven years after starting my tax practice. I could have left a couple of years earlier, but enjoyed working with the old gang.

In 2014 I found a company in California that specializes in tax preparer marketing. Together we built my website, client portal and they provided the tools and expertise for Search Engine Optimization (S.E.O). I consider S.E.O a process left best for professionals, as it was very easy to waste money, thinking you are doing the right thing. Today, new clients, as well as old friends searching for me on the internet comment on how easy it was to find me.f

The biggest struggle was finding a good assistant, with the seasonal nature of the business, coupled with limited resources, most prospects today do not see long term potential, so the most qualified have more secure opportunities available to them.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I consider myself a boutique tax and bookkeeping office. I keep a limited number of bookkeeping clients, offer payroll and income tax, services. I specialize in tax resolution. Helping taxpayers negotiate and understand the Internal Revenue Service.

As an I.R.S. Enrolled Agent, the highest designation the Treasury Department awards tax professionals who have demonstrated their expertise in tax law, I also commit to annual education and must live by a code of ethics known as Circular 230. Only an Enrolled Agent, Attorney, or CPA are allowed unlimited rights to represent clients before the IRS. I take pride when I can solve a tax issue for my client(s), help reduce the amount they owe when they don’t have the ability to pay with an Offer In Compromise, stop a garnishment or levy, or enter the taxpayer in an installment agreement they can afford, while protecting the assets they have.

I ask my clients to submit reviews to google or Taxbuzz.com or Countingworks.com when I read them I see a common theme, Jeffrey explains the taxes to us. He takes the time to make sure we understand why I am paying the amount I am paying. I hear all too often that their previous preparer tells them to sign here, and this is what your refund/owe amount is.

What sets my firm apart is the personal service. I want all my clients to understand why they are paying the taxes they are, how to reduce them. My clients know they can contact me at any time of the year and my door is always open. When a new client works with me, they know they are getting an expert in tax law.

There are no minimum qualifications other than a PTIN from the IRS. Stripmall type firms use these preparers to staff their offices (they are called unenrolled preparers). What the clients didn’t know, is if the preparer did something wr0ng, unless they are accredited, the IRS will not even talk to the preparer to defend the taxpayer. As an Enrolled Agent not only can a represent my client on that return, but the returns the unenrolled preparer did as well.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
When I was young, I completed Jr. College with an Associates Degree in Printing Technology. I had the opportunity to complete my Bachelor at Rochester Institute of Technology. I decided making money was more important than school. I should have taken that opportunity.

I did earn a Bachelor of Arts in Business Communications for Arizona State University in 2015 graduating from W.P. Carey School of Business and Barrett, The Honors College at ASU. If only I completed that in the 1980’s.
