
Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Boettcher.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeffrey. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I began in the industry on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), out of college, trading interest rate futures. Beginning with PaineWebber (now UBS) in 1999 I have worked with Wells Fargo Advisors, Bank of America and with Wachovia Securities and with their Private and Business Banking clients.
After watching the financial services sector go through the turmoil that existed in 2008 and with Wachovia’s failure in that same period my several of my clients pushed me to ‘go independent.’ They believed that the best way for me to be able to help them reach their financial goals was for me to be free from the constraints some banks place on their financial salesmen, such as a heavy push to sell proprietary products and business models that incentivize commissions over sound investment advice.
Since going independent, the advisory business (Bedrock Investment Advisors – www.bedrockia.com) has expanded to several different States; New York, Washington, Nebraska, Florida, with several other offices likely to open this year. We have also opened Bedrock Financial Services, LLC (www.bedrockfs.com) an insurance wholesaler (the industry would refer to it as an Independent Marketing Organization – IMO for short), which helps over 200 financial professionals around the Country, in their efforts to secure and assist new clients.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road less traveled. Beyond the fact that industry itself is incredibly competitive, our road has been anything but smooth. I never wavered in my commitment to my clients or to my business model, and we’ve seen some fantastic growth, especially over the last year. But our results have come from incredibly long hours and countless weekends of work.
The results have been worth, however, from the performance we have been able to deliver to our investment clients along with number of financial professionals who have begun using our systems to help their own clients secure a more secure retirement, we have been incredibly fortunate to see our systems along with as our efforts move from the ‘on paper’ stage to practical, real-world, applications and results. I think our success has come from a combination of good ideas, timing, and hard work.
Specific challenges:
Growing talent within the office, and finding employees who really understand the company’s vision and are willing to work hard to deliver world-class results and service to our clients. Thankfully, we have an incredibly talented and hard-working team today.
Developing the software and systems needed to service the clients we work for and the financial professionals who use those systems. Much of the industry is geared around these massive ‘too-big-to-fail, department store-like financial companies.
Clients who want a more personalized experience often choose a boutique like Bedrock, who can devote more time to each client because of our size, but the software and systems that are readily available often push even the most customer-focused companies toward either a cookie-cutter solution to clients that the industry had already built.
We didn’t like being forced to accept these generic solutions, and instead we develop some of our own software and systems to deliver the customized solutions that we thought our clients would benefit from most – we took the more difficult route and have chosen to build these systems, some of which were created from scratch.
To ensure that we could give our clients what they need without the constrained ‘inside-the-box’ thinking that a good portion of the industry accepts.
