Meet Jeff Lund of Lund Guitars in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Lund.

Jeff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been woodworking for 20+ years. After spending some time learning to play guitar, it became obvious I needed another guitar to support alternate tunings. After lots of reading and Internet research I embarked on an effort to build my own. Pictures of my progress posted to Facebook attracted the attention of a guitarist who happened to also own an auto body shop in Kansas City and who also painted guitars as a side business. He offered to paint my guitar if I sent it to him. Apparently he liked the craftsmanship because he later ask me to build a guitar for him, and then another and another. Soon I was I producing custom made guitars for a friend of his and through other acquaintances here in the Phoenix area. The need was clear, guitar players really looking to create a custom look, sound, and feel need someone who can turn their vision in to something spectacular they want to play on stage.

Lund Guitars, LLC was born January 2013 and was an obvious match to combine my love for music with my hobby of woodworking. I am a perfectionist and passionate about building quality guitars that exactly deliver on what the player is looking for. There is such a sense of satisfaction in seeing someone so happy about playing the guitar I personally built for them. The first time they see and hold the guitar is an amazing feeling.

I am continually looking for ways to mature my craft through research and trying new techniques. I studied under Charles Fox, Master Luthier and owner of the American School of Lutherie through a course that allowed me to refine little things to really take it to the next level.

Currently I am member of the Guild of American Luthiers and Lund Guitars is a member of NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants). Building only 4 to 5 custom guitars a year, Lund Guitars takes on only new orders through word of mouth. Perhaps later it will become a full time endeavor for me, but right now it allows for an incredible sense of accomplishment with each guitar I deliver.

Has it been a smooth road?
Guitar building is an art combined with some physics and some skill in woodworking. It takes a tremendous amount of patience and sometimes a little trial and error. Sometimes you learn lessons the hard way, like cutting in to $500 worth specialty figured lumber and then realizing than you measured the center point from the wrong location causing you to scrap the whole thing and start over. I’ve not had any specific hardships on my journey other than to say I’m always learning and improving my methods based on errors of the past. It’s what makes us human, we learn from our mistakes. Process improvement is continuous!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lund Guitars is a small custom guitar manufacturer. We specialize in hand crafting solid body and semi-hollow body electric guitars/basses for the artist – custom designs on wood canvas inspired by the artist’s desires.

Company Goals and Objectives: Originally started as a hobby, Lund Guitars will grow through word of mouth marketing and social media engagement achieving small, modest goals. We seek local and regional brand recognition over time through organic growth keeping customer satisfaction as the highest priority.

Business Philosophy: Building custom guitars should be fun for the luthier and exciting for the client.

Lund Guitars’ clients are local and regional bands, artists, and players who wish to have a custom or unique guitar built specifically for them. A guitar that fits them exactly and sounds and feels exactly how they want it – Clients who aspire to own and play a truly custom instrument.

Generally, the guitar manufacturing industry is highly commercialized. Large firms such as Les Paul, PRS, and Fender dominate both low, medium, and high-end guitars. Most guitar manufacturers offer custom lines allowing clients to customize components and wood selection but design from the beginning to the end is lacking. There are multiple small guitar makers across the United States, generally servicing their local community. Changes in wood availability, price, and responsible harvesting regulations will continue to affect pricing across the industry.

Excellent customer satisfaction, one on one relationship with the artists and true artistry relating to lutherie are all core strengths of Lund Guitars. I find the work both interesting and extremely rewarding. I build only custom guitars and basses. Lund Guitars produces no “standard” models. Every guitar is created from scratch which allows me to create something that is exactly what the guitarist had envisioned.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chandler is a great city! I found that local business and residents promoting local businesses are very kind and engaged here. I enjoy participating in social media posts about Chandler businesses. It’s very much a city with a sense of community. Heat is always an issue for wood. As a result, air conditioning my home shop (garage) is critical, but also very achievable for others who want to use their garage space for starting their business. At the moment I don’t foresee a change in location for Lund Guitars. In the future, should it grow beyond my current location capabilities, I would certainly expect to remain local.
