Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeannie Gambill.
Jeannie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing accounting right out of college, however, I didn’t have an accounting degree, I had a teaching degree which I just didn’t enjoy. I was doing bookkeeping for small businesses and then got a job with UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) where I started learning about non-profit accounting and really found a passion for that. Years later, I received my masters in Accounting, and I finally felt like my degree matched my passion. I had jobs working for large and small companies, as well as charter schools, and other non-profits, but I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I started my bookkeeping business in 2006 when I was a stay at home mom looking to make some more income. I went back to work, but still kept my business on the side – it was always a dream of mine to run my business full time, and in 2013, I was able to do that. Today, I work with over 30 clients, small businesses and non-profits, I help my clients know their numbers and have significant savings and increased profitability.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I certainly haven’t had a smooth road, however, I have had great support from my family along the way. When I went back to work when I had been running my business part-time, it wasn’t a choice I wanted to make, My ex-husband decided to move back to NY, and leave me to take care of our four years old alone with no support. Basically, I needed to have a salary and benefits to help us get by. At that time, I still had some wonderful clients, a few which I still have today. who decided to keep me on as their accountant, and work with me in the evening or weekends. I am so thankful for clients who believed in me so much and stuck with me. Luckily, being a good accountant means you can always find a job, which I did, so that definitely made things much easier. Women can still survive and thrive after becoming a single mom. I never really liked throwing out the label – I am a mom, and that is enough!
West Valley Accounting Services, LLC – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I work with small businesses and non-profits. I specialize mostly in service-based businesses, but I can also help out some others, I work with an auto shop, restaurant, pet shop, etc. I prefer service based though, I work virtually, so that means I don’t come to the client’s office, however, we can meet on the phone, or via zoom. My clients have loved this because I work around their time, and they don’t have to be in the office for us to work together. I have systems where clients can scan all of their information, and it works out great, clients love it. I am proud of being able to teach people in non-accounting jargon what their reports mean. It is hard to understand a profit and loss or balance sheet for a new business owner especially, I pride myself in being able to explain everything in a way that everyone can understand.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Definitely, I have been lucky. I would say I have been blessed with the greatest clients. Sometimes, they find me in crazy ways, so I can only think that is luck!
