Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Perez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jazmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started back in high school, I remember very well I always had a thing for trying new things out, whether it was clothing, shoes, jewelry or new hair. Honestly now I remember those days and I say “what was I thinking” lol. After school on my freshman and sophomore years, I would go to my neighbor’s house and do their hair with box color and even bleach, I would use a wide tooth comb to create the look of highlights because I didn’t know how to place foils. Which crazy but true, now using a comb it is actually a technique to highlight hair… I remember bleaching my hair to a very yellow-orange color, so my mom took me to a hair salon to get it fixed, but months later I was back on doing my own hair. That’s when I found out about attending cosmetology school after high school and community college hours, I convinced myself it was a great opportunity and that I had to take advantage of it, the plan was to become a licensed cosmetologist right after graduating high school, but that would come with a big commitment.
As being the youngest of four in a family who legally immigrated to the US from Mexico and started a living basically from zero and also having a sister graduating a year ahead of me, made it difficult for my parents to support me financially, so I found a job at a cell phone carrier to pay for my tuition. I had the choice of a big commitment or to enjoy my time with friends and do what teens my age would do, but I got committed to a 7:30am-10pm schedule from Monday-Friday and work full days on Saturday and Sundays. I DID IT!!! In 2006 I graduated from North Canyon HS and Classic Beauty college, best decision I made for my life career. I love it, I’m passionate about it but more than anything I love the persistent and a dedicated woman I’ve become. I am fortunate for all the support I had from people who were in the beauty Industry before me and mostly for those who believed in me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but for sure it has given me a lot to learn from. In 2010, I started renting a station at a new place for the third time, a great location with great people near my house. My life was great, I was pursuing my dream and now it was time to start planning a family. Marriage and a precious baby girl came along the year and I was in charge of my own work schedule so my family time and work time were working just perfect. One day I get a late call, letting me know that my workplace is permanently closing down. Long days came along looking for a nearby place to take my clientele, my schedule was out of control moving clients around and spending less time with my daughter because I was driving around looking for that new place. Until I finally found a place very close by, but unfortunately it was nothing close to what I could call my workplace. I would come home stressed and sometimes crying seeing how I was losing clients and I couldn’t do anything about it.
One day I woke up saying I couldn’t do it anymore, I needed my stability back at home and the only way I could do it it was not bringing stress to my family, but my husband on the other hand wouldn’t accept it, he knew how much I loved my career and he wouldn’t let me finish it. He traded his side job work truck for labor to build a home-based studio on a room addition our home had. I honestly didn’t think it would work I was exhausted and convinced that it was the end of it, but with my husband insisting and seeing how nothing will stop him, I had to give it a last try. In November of 2012 XY Hair Studio was established and opened its doors for the first time, which name came after our daughters first and middle initials. She was my lucky charm! I knew how much she needed a happy mommy and my job would bring me happiness and joy. Since then, I have continued to put smiles on clients and clients on me! In 2014 XY Hair Studio was recognized for trust, honesty, truth, transparency, honor promises, responsive, safeguard privacy and embody integrity with an A+ rating by The Better Business Bureau, till now it stands.
Please tell us about XY Hair Studio by Jazmin.
At Xy Hair Studio you will find two hair stations, a makeup station, waiting area indoors & outdoors, restroom, coffee bar and a very positive and private atmosphere full of gratitude and love for everyone who comes. I specialize in Amonia & Amonia free color, balayage, hair painting, highlights, men & women haircuts, three hair extension methods, color correction, smoothing treatments, makeup & styles for all occasions. What I’m mostly proud and thankful for is for all the things this career has brought to me and my family. To me, it brought trust and connection with my clients, specially for those who have been loyal for the past 13 years, to my family it has given us the vision to truly believe and support each other.
Every hairdresser is unique and we all have a very unique way of working and seeing things, we’re all artists! But what sets me apart is that I have learned to believe in me, to not compare myself and to try to be better than what I was yesterday, respect all of my good or bad experiences, to move forward and to throw my fears out the window and to always allow all changes that come my way, but most importantly to put everything in God’s hands, because his times are perfect.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Probably if I had to start all over, I would do it the same way all over again. Only I would’ve believed in my self since the beginning and reflect more often, remember to give myself credit (something my mom & husband always tell me) that not always I have to be doing or chasing something, that it is OK to sit down, watch and enjoy!
